Here are the updated stats for the Piedmont Triad Spring 2020 BioThon! Davidson county has a staggering 1,781 observations with the help of top participants kellyek, erinedwards, sailingsharon, and hikernut. Not to mention the Greater NC Spring BioThon which we started not too long ago already has 446 observations surely due to the top observers kylezjones13 and graceupshaw.

The BioThon is set to end June 19th, so there is still time left to go out and get some observations or try to identify what others have observed. To join it's easy as 1,2 ,3!

1. Download the iNaturalist app on your mobile device and create an account (or do so at www.inaturalist.org)
2. From the “More” tab, click on Projects and join the Spring 2020 BioThon where you live: ALAMANCE, DAVIDSON, FORSYTH, GUILFORD, RANDOLPH, ROCKINGHAM, or the Greater NC BioThon if you life outside these counties!
3. Go out and observe wild animals and plants. Snap photos, identify the organism (the iNaturalist database will make suggestions and your hosts will help too), add your location, and save your observation.
*** If you go to a public park or waterway, please remember to look for hazards and follow CDC guidelines for protection against Covid-19.

As we continue to explore nature and social distant we wanted to shout out some awesome participants over the new few days and weeks to come!
The Alamance County Spring 2020 BioThon is second in observations overall in the Piedmont Triad and with the variety of observations we have also seen incredible biodiversity. So a special shout out goes to participant acj0728 for observing 74 species, we are inspired by your determination and exploration!
We also want to shout out participants chacohiker, kingdom, and bmccandless for all of the species they have shared with us!

More stats to come in each of our County BioThons so stay tuned!

If you have ever wanted to learn the names of the flowers and trees here in the Piedmont – or just need a fun and relaxing activity – please join us for the Alamance Spring BioThon on iNatualist.org now through June 19: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/alamance-spring-2020-biothon. It's easy!
1. Create a free account on iNaturalist.org
2. Join a BioThon in one or more counties: Alamance, Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, or Rockingham
3. Take pictures of plants and critters that you are curious about and upload them to the website or the free smartphone app

This activity is great for all skills levels. All of the naturalists in the online community will help you to identify any unfamiliar plants & critters.

The most active participants will receive a free lunchbox or a painted rock by our own in-house artist, Maddie James, but the best part is how much you will learn about your own backyard and the ecology here in the Piedmont! Please take the appropriate precautions (both indoors and outdoors) during the COVID-19 pandemic for personal safety and public health. There are plenty of ways to explore nature from home!
