An old-fashioned urban legend that has lasted for centuries is Bloody Mary, which is frequently told to thrill and frighten people at sleepovers and around campfires. According to the belief, you can call forth Bloody Mary, a spiteful spirit, by repeatedly reciting her name in front of a mirror in a dimly lit room. The story goes that following the rite, Bloody Mary can appear in the mirror, her spectral presence provoking anxiety and fright in those who dare call her. Different rituals and outcomes are included in the legend's variations, which heightens its terrifying allure as a warning against delving in the paranormal.

The modern urban legend known as Slender Man has captured the attention of internet culture and served as an inspiration for a number of media, including books, movies, and video games. Slender Man is described as a tall, slender figure with tentacle-like appendages and a featureless face that stalks and traumatizes children and young people in forests and abandoned places. Slender Man's mythology, which has its roots in internet forums and creepypasta tales, appeals to our innate apprehensions about the strange and the unknown. The unsettling appearance of the Slender Man and the uncertainty surrounding its origins and motivations have kept audiences intrigued and uneasy even in spite of the legend's fiction.

Built in 1829, the castle-like Eastern State Penitentiary redefined the use of solitary confinement. Prisoners ate, exercised, and lived alone. A guard would cover an inmate's head with a hood when he exited his cell so he couldn't see or be seen. Overcrowding forced the prison to give up its solitary system in 1913, but until it closed permanently in 1970, the methods of punishment remained harsh (chaining an inmate's tongue to his wrists is one example).

Today, thousands of people visit the location annually for Halloween events and the museum. Ghostly occurrences have reportedly included pacing footsteps, dark forms, and disembodied laughter.

Since its inception in 1909, the Stanley Hotel's opulent Georgian architecture and well-known whiskey bar have drawn tourists to Estes Park. However, the hotel's notoriety grew when it served as the model for Stephen King's fictional Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Aside from that unsettling association, the hotel has been linked to several additional ghost sightings and unexplained piano music. The Stanley Hotel capitalizes on its notoriety by offering nightly ghost tours and psychic readings from Madame Vera, who works there.

As of this writing, the Nightmare on Elm Street film series has nine installments, including a reboot, a crossover, and a somewhat prematurely titled sequel called The Final Nightmare (which it was not, obviously). None quite measure up to the fantastic original by Wes Craven. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) is taut, humorous, and terrifying, standing out in a decade that was scarcely lacking on horror hits and presenting, in Freddy Krueger, the most fearsome boogeyman to ever don knitwear.

It's easy to overlook the true brilliance of James Wan's The Conjuring, given its beginnings in the The Conjuring Universe. Instead of playing with the conventions of the "demonic possession" subgenre, Wan explores the case files of actual paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren to create a character-driven tale about a rural family that has been overtaken by the devil. The storyline may not be novel, but Wan's handling of it is nothing short of brilliant: he introduces us to the Warren family, shows us their love for one another, and then pits their faith in God and one another against a force driving their family apart. Almost a perfectly timed exercise in tension and release, it's almost a relief when the film's conclusion sees the appearance of the resident evil.

A visit to China's old royal palace, the Forbidden City, which is now a museum, is a must for any trip to Beijing. However, you might be surprised to learn that paranormal fans hold a strong reputation for this well-known tourist attraction. Over the course of its 600-year existence as a palace, the complex saw its fair share of deaths, whether as a result of emperor-ordered executions or envious concubines poisoning one another. It goes without saying that since the palace was made public in the 1940s, there have been a lot of tales of unusual occurrences. The most popular version has a woman, clad in white, going around the grounds and crying—as do most excellent ghost stories.

At first glance, the movie Audition (1999) that made director Takashi Miike a global celebrity doesn't even seem like a horror movie. We follow a widower as he attempts, through the fairly shady and deceptive audition process mentioned in the title, to get back into the dating game with a younger crush. And we don't start to realize something is seriously wrong until we find out the object of his desire has been waiting by the phone for days on end, seemingly in an apartment devoid of everything save an eerie sack. And there are the eye-needles and the sawing of the feet. Kiri, kiri, kiri...

One of the most significant archaeological sites in Egypt (and the entire globe) is the Valley of the Kings, which is close to Luxor along the Nile River. Pharaohs from the 16th to the 11th century BC used the valley as a burial place; nevertheless, it wasn't until the tomb of Tutankhamun was found in 1922 that the valley became well-known worldwide. An English aristocrat named Lord Carnarvon provided funding for the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb. However, he passed away from an infection soon after the burial site was found, sparking tales of a "pharaoh's curse" that have persisted to this day, inspiring fiction and Mummy sequels. Some visitors to the Valley of the Kings today report seeing what they believe to be the vision of an Egyptian pharaoh drawn by spectral black horses in a chariot.

What could be more terrifying than a ghostly graveyard? Most likely a 50 feet underwater haunting cemetery. Chuuk Lagoon (formerly Truk Lagoon) in Micronesia was the site of an air strike by American troops in 1944, ending the Japanese Navy's three-day fortification of the lagoon during World War II. Numerous battleships, aircraft, tanks, and train carriages plummeted to the lagoon's floor, where they are still visible today as the "Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon." Scuba divers flock to the ship graveyard, which PADI has dubbed "one of the best wreck diving destinations on the planet." They can swim up close to the wartime vessels, which are strewn with weapons, gas masks, and, some superstitious divers claim, a few waterlogged ghosts.

St. George's Church (about 125 miles east of Prague), which was first constructed in 1352, has a lengthy history. Over the ages, the edifice suffered numerous near-death experiences from flames, and in 1968, part of its roof fell during a funeral service. Following that incident, the church's congregants refused to enter, believing it to be haunted; as a result, the structure was looted and vandalized.

Everything changed in 2012 when a University of West Bohemia art student came up with the idea to create a series of thirty ghost sculptures that sat in the pews with their heads down in an effort to entice people to return to the church. Visitors have gone to the "Ghost Church" today to take pictures and even sit amid the motionless apparitions and pray.
