Ari Hoenig is a jazz drummer, composer and educator known for his unusual and intense approach to drumming emphasizing complex rhythms in direct harmony with other group members. Ari is widely noted particularly for his drumming not being relegated to just keeping tempo, or being a side issue to the music he plays in, but rather for elevating drumming as an indispensable part of the performance.

Ari’s trio joins us for two sold out sets in the midst of a world tour in support of his 2022 release Golden Treasures which features Ari on Drums, Gadi Lehavi on Piano and Ben Tiberio on bass. From July 21st, 2023 here’s the second set of a performance from the Ari Hoenig Trio, Live at the Bop Stop

Having been called a “wonderful composer” and “sophisticated player” as well as “one of the most unique guitar voices to emerge over the last decade,” Brandon Coleman is an on-the-rise and in-demand performer in the world of creative guitar playing. Based out of Cincinnati, OH, Coleman performs and composes music that is intricate, personal, and cinematic, inspired by his musical idols and his roots in the Appalachian mountains.

As adept as he is at guitar playing, his work in the producer’s chair shouldn’t go unmentioned, particularly his work with Sam Blakeslee and Wistful Thinking. Brandon’s value at shaping the sound of others is as important as how he shapes his own.

Featuring Brandon Coleman on Guitar, Matt Wiles on Bass and Jeff Mellot on Drums and from a July 28th, 2023 performance it’s the Brandon Coleman Trio – Live at the Bop Stop.

All music used with permission by Jamey Haddad.

Jamey Haddad holds a unique place in both jazz and world music. Working with Yo Yo Ma – Paul Simon and Sting, Jamey is one of America’s most prominent world music percussionists.
This August 19th, 2023 performance catches the Jamey Haddad Quartet in the midst of a tour that features the works of Keith Jarrett. In it, not only does Jamey talk a bit about Keith’s work but talks a bit about his personal experiences that underpin the pieces featured.

It doesn’t hurt that the rest of the group is terrific in their own right. Featuring Bobby Selvaggio on Saxophone, Jonah Ferguson on Guitar, Kip Reed on Bass and Jamey Haddad on Drums and Percussion, it’s the Jamey Haddad Quartet playing Keith Jarrett – Live at the Bop Stop.

Both Sides of Joni is a reinterpretation of Joni Mitchell’s music that was born as a collaboration between pianist Monika Herzig and vocalist Janiece Jaffe. The project – produced as a collaborative in the summer of 2020 amidst the COVID epidemic, resulted in an album of Joni Mitchell standards arranged with a jazz twist.

Shortly after the debut of the results of this project in Indianapolis in 2021 Janice Jaffe passed unexpectedly. But New York based vocalist Alexis Cole stepped in to help ensure the vision of this project reached fruition.

This performance, part of a larger US and European tour – features Monika Herzig on piano, Peter Kinele on guitar, Cassius Goens on drums, Gina Schwarz on bass and Alexis Cole on vocals, and from a September 7th, 2023 performance it’s Monika Herzig and Alexis Cole performing Both Sides of Joni – Live at the Bop Stop.

All music used with permission by Todd Marcus Quintet.

Everyone comes to jazz in their own way and growing up for me, that pathway to jazz came via the clarinet, bass clarinet and alto clarinet which I will not be playing for you on today’s show.
So when Todd Marcus and Virginia MacDonald made an appearance on our stage, it was a must attend for me. And they didn’t disappoint.

Todd Marcus’ straight-ahead bass clarinet playing has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz. His music swings hard with both a fiery and introspective intensity but also maintains a strong lyrical sensibility. Marcus’ compositions draw largely on straight-ahead jazz and classical influences but over recent years have also increasingly explored the Middle-Eastern sounds from his Egyptian-American heritage.

But wait, there’s more! Todd is joined by Toronto based clarinetist Virginia MacDonald. A lauded clarinetist in her own right, Virginia has performed and composed on over a dozen Juno Award winning albums and helps lead the Canadian Jazz Collective.

Featuring Eric Kennedy on Drums, Steven Arnold on Bass, Hannah Mayer on Piano, Virginia MacDonald on Clarinet and Todd Marcus on Bass Clarinet, from July 12th, 2023, it’s the Todd Marcus Quintet featuring Virginia MacDonald – Live at the Bop Stop.

All music used with permission by Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini.

New York City based Natalie Cressman is a singer/songwriter and trombonist who draws inspiration from a vast array of deep and powerful musical currents. She released her 5th album in April 2019, this time in collaboration with Brazilian composer, guitarist and vocalist Ian Faquini.

Drawing from impressionism, jazz, and the great Brazilian songwriting tradition, Setting Rays of Summer is a ten-track collection of original material featuring compositions in three different languages: Portuguese, English and French. With the warm instrumentation of acoustic guitar and trombone alongside two-part vocal harmonies hugging the Brazilian-accented Portuguese, Cressman & Faquini weave their musical voices together to create a fully orchestrated sound befitting a much larger ensemble, and you’ll hear much of that material on this program.
From September 8th, 2023 it’s Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini – Live at the Bop Stop.

All music used with permission by Dan Wilson and Dan Bruce.

Dan Bruce graces our stage regularly now – but he spent a number of years cutting his teeth in Chicago where guitar duo jam sessions were commonplace.

They’re a little bit less common in Cleveland – so we knew we were in for a special night when he teamed up with Akron native – Joey DeFrancesco touring guitarist and Mack Avenue Records recording artist Dan Wilson for a night of two guitarist doing what they do best. We know this because the first performance we aired during Season Three of the program was so good, they came back and performed for us, and for you, again.

From a sold out show on July 1st, 2023 here are Dan Bruce and Dan Wilson – Live at the Bop Stop.
