Your secret power as an artist is focus.

Your ability to lock in without distractions will take you miles ahead of the next person, given enough time in the seat.

Most people have a form of creative or entrepreneurial ADD, which is fueled by our current climate of social media and algorithms.

We see people blowing up on Youtube, Tik Tok, Instagram, etc. and think "I want to do that too."

So you choose to abandon ship, and try to do what the next person is doing, without realizing the years of effort and focus that go into someone building a successful career as an artist.

Maybe this lack of focus plays out in your release strategy.

Or maybe it's lack of focus on the style of music you make.

One of the best things you can do for your career as an artist is to learn how to focus. Train your brain to love the process, not the results.

I say train, because our ability to focus can be improved by simply doing things that cause us to slow down and be in the moment.

It's no surprise that when I spend more time reading for longer periods of time, I find my ability to lock in while at the studio significantly improved.

When you hit a wall during your creative process, it can be easy to pull out your phone and seek distraction. Our brain doesn't like to do hard things if it's out of shape.

Next time you go to work on a project, keep a pen and pad next to you, and write down a check mark each time you find yourself distracted on Youtube, pulling out your phone, or basically doing anything other than the task at hand.

You'll be surprised at how often you find yourself distracted during this process.

The key here is to observe our mind seeking distraction and resist it. Setting a timer can greatly help this process.

I like to do 50 minutes of focused work with a 10 minute break. When I find myself seeking distraction, I write it down as something to do during my break.

The more often you do this, the easier it will be. If 50 minutes is too daunting, try starting with 20 minutes, with a 5 minute break.
