Have you ever heard of the backwards effect?

It's when you start from the end and work your way back so that you can get rid of the fear of failing... don't tell me I'm the only one who has been afraid of failing...🫢

I like to write a lot of my children's books this way.

Basically you start with your illustrations first...Get your main character down and then write your book based off of your character.

I know this sounds impossible, but it is totally doable and this what you'll do...

Step 1: Go on places like Canva, adobe stock, and creative fabrica to find your characters (make sure they are copyright free and are not AI...you want to support a real illustrator...

Step 2: Upload your character images (make sure they are in different poses) to canva (there is a free version of canva you can use)

Step 3: Start separating your characters on different pages and start building and writing your scenes based off of what you found.

In order for this to work though, you need to make sure you keep an open mind and most importantly have fun with it.

Have a theme for the book in mind, but don't be afraid to change it as you create your book.
This allows you to get rid of the fear of failing before you even start because you are starting with zero expectations....
no expectations=no fear....THIS is "the backwards effect"

Let's get rid of the barriers 🚪 that are stopping you from publishing your book and finally self-publish a professional looking children's book.

I still can't believe I typed words on a screen and became a published author.👩‍💻

If hadn't taken that risk to publish my children's book I wouldn't be able to experience the joy of gently prying a book out of my daughter's hand every night before bed....begging for me to keep the light on for just one more page.

This coming from a girl who used to cry every time I tried to get her to read...

I don't think I will ever get over the impact my books have had on not only my children's lives, but the countless others who have read my books...📚

If I was to start my author journey all over again this is what I would do...

Stage 1: decide what your book topic will be about

At its simplest form, what are you good at and what can you teach kids to do?

Do NOT try to complicate things…but don’t try to fake it till you make it here. Really choose something you’re an expert in.

BUT…

….at the same time, it can be literally anything. One of my most successful students writes about dairy cows because she used to live on a dairy farm. Another student is a nurse who wrote about the body systems to help kids learn about how everything works together.

Stage 2: Illustrate your books like me. (more on this stage later.) 👉🏼

Stage 3: Write the book you’ll be self-publishing.

Start with a short picture book to get your feet wet.

Really aim to solve a very specific problem with your book. Don’t go broad.

Ex: “How to Train Your Dog” is too vague and won’t sell.

BUT

“How To Train Your Dog in 7 Days” will.

OR

“Kids Cookbook” is too vague but “Easy Cooking Recipes For Kids” would do so much better.

Stage 4: Set up your Amazon KDP account & Insert Book Info

Make sure you use keywords that your ideal reader is looking for. Keep your book description very simple, but very specific to what is on the inside of the book…speak to the pain point.

Use the software “Publisher Rocket” to help with profitable keywords.

Stage 5: Enroll in Kindle Select

Kindle Select = free traffic.

When you run a Free Ad Promo on Amazon in the first 2 weeks of publishing your book, Amazon will push your book out to more people.

The more people see your book in the Kindle store the more likely they are to purchase your book.

And because you’ve picked the right keywords and spoke directly to your reader, they will see be more apt to buy it WITHOUT you having to go out and search for ALL the readers.

By doing this you are able to make sales while you sleep, or eat or homeschool your kids like me AND you increase your book royalties by 55% compared to being traditionally published. It’s pretty awesome lol.💵

When writing for a child we need to write LIKE A CHILD and that takes FAITH.

FAITH IS DOING SOMETHING WITHOUT FULLY UNDERSTANDING, BUT TRUSTING IT'S GOING TO WORK OUT.

Don't worry about planning every detail of your story. Let the story flow...play and pretend and ILLUSTRATE FIRST before you write.

Children don't plan their stories...they play and pretend and let it come naturally...

This is the type of confidence that we need when we go to write our stories. There are no wrong answers.

So let's give it a try...
