Facebook Live Interview with Superintendent Jeff Wallace
Today's FB Live interview to discuss plans for the rest of the 2020-21 school year experienced technical difficulties. Please feel free to watch the portion of the video that aired. Below are highlights that did not present in the video. In addition, these same comments and explanations can be viewed @ https://youtu.be/ZtaZZx2Hc8Y.
>> Primary reasons that DCS will remain in Plan B for middle and high school:
--Social distancing requirement will remain 6 feet by NCDHHS. There are over 130 classrooms in Grades 6-12 that have 26 or more students in the class. It would be impossible to maintain 6', or even 3' in those classes with all studetns present.
--Bus routes would have to be modified and multiple routes would have to be added to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
--Daily symptom checks would still be required. For example, that would require 1300 temperature checks to be taken at Davie High alone before school could begin.
--Some students have taken on work to supplement their families. High school staff is fearful that those students who need to work would choose work over returning to school.
>> Additional reasons to stay in Plan B for middle and high school:
--After the senate bill would go into effect, we are out for spring break one week later. Looking back at Christmas break, DCS saw an increase in cases among students and staff after returning to school. We are concerned the same will happen after spring break.
--After spring break, there are 8 weeks remaining in the school year.
State testing is required for grades 3-12 during the last two weeks of school; End-of-Course exams are administered the last five days of school.
Therefore, significant changes would be made for only an additional 12-14 days of school (i.e. students being in school 2 days per week vs. 8 days per week).
--Any increase in cases could result in us being unable to host an in person graduation. Currently, our numbers of positive cases are at the lowest they have bee
