22 years ago today…I still cry...I still have a range of emotions

I had landed at Heathrow a few hours earlier for a two-week business trip to London. I was having a late lunch in Marylebone with work colleagues and a dear friend. What we saw on television left everyone stunned and silent. Everyone knew that the world had changed.

I called Carrie--this was before we were married and before our boys were born--and my parents--both have since passed away--to let them know I was okay. We prepare to head to Wiltshire to get out of the capital in case there were attacks. Fortunately, the situation there was calm. The shared experience was another strand of a thick cord and permanent bond of friendship (thank you Michael Rawlinson).

One of the most moving things was the memorial service and moment of silence attended by many thousands who came to the old American Embassy two days later. London fell hauntingly silent--no traffic, no tube, no conversations, only the sound of the breeze blowing through the trees in Grosvenor Square. There was an outpouring of expressions of sorrow and hospitality.

When I watch the coverage of that day with our boys...I still cry...the loss of life, the raw display of evil, the feelings of further obliteration of innocence...

Ideas and ideology have consequences...may we never forget!
