Gray’s Harbor Radio Group’s flagship station, KXRO, first went on the air May 28, 1928, during the Prohibition. police officer Roy Olmsted, who had a side business as a rum-runner, the station was used to signal runners when it was safe to transport their “product”. KXRO continues it’s community broadcasting over 80 years later with Grays Harbor’s only award winning radio News Department. Plus, KX

RO is the only radio station in Grays Harbor to ever be nominated for Excellence In Community Broadcasting by the National Association Of Broadcasters…two years in a row! The next station in the group’s lineup was born in 1971 when Dale Gunderson started KDUX in Ocean Shores, Wash., with a “beautiful music” format. KDUX was moved to Aberdeen and became a rock station in the late 1970s. It continues it’s success as a the dominate Classic Rock format today as "The Rock of the Coast". In a world of bland satellite music formats, KDUX is the ONLY radio station on the coast to feature local air personalities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The two stations were purchased by Pioneer Broadcasting, who operated KXRO as an adult contemporary station and KDUX as a rock station for several years until their purchase by Morris Communications in December 1998. Morris Communications added KIX 95.3 (KXXK), “The Harbor’s New Country station,” and KWOK, ESPN Sports Radio 1490 in April 2001, establishing Gray’s Harbor Radio Group as the entity it is today. KIX is the areas only local Country station providing the The Harbor’s New Country with Live and Local personalities. We live and work in Grays Harbor and Pacific County…and we love it!

In an effort to solve and deter criminal activity, the Montesano Police Department has entered into an agreement with Flock Safety to add three automatic license plate reading cameras to the jurisdictional boundaries of the City of Montesano. The Montesano Police Department wishes to remain transparent to the public in an effort to maintain the public's trust.

These cameras are used to capture license plates of vehicles that are or may be, associated with criminal activities occurring in or around the City of Montesano. These cameras are NOT speed enforcement cameras nor can they be used to monitor traffic violations that occur. They merely take a photograph of the vehicle and license plates of those vehicles, they do NOT capture video.

License plate numbers give the Montesano Police Department actionable leads needed to solve investigations. Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology, also known as License Plate Recognition, provides automated detection of license plates. ALPR is used by the Montesano Police Department to convert data associated with vehicle license plates for official law enforcement purposes, including identifying stolen or wanted vehicles, stolen license plates, and missing persons. ALPRs may also be used to gather information related to active warrants, homeland security, electronic surveillance, suspect interdiction, and stolen property recovery.

As part of the Montesano Police Department policy and procedure for the use of these ALPR cameras, the following applies to all members of our department:

Use of an ALPR is restricted to the purposes outlined below. Department personnel shall not use, or allow others to use, the equipment or database records for any unauthorized purpose.

1. An ALPR shall only be used for official and legitimate law enforcement business.

2. An ALPR may be used in conjunction with any patrol operation or official department investigation. Reasonable suspicion or probable cause is not required before using an ALPR.

3. Any member of this department using the ALPR system to search for vehicles shall enter the case number associated with the investigation and the purpose of the search into the ALPR system.

4. No member of this department shall operate ALPR equipment, or access ALPR data, without first completing department-approved training.

5. If practicable, the officer should verify an ALPR response through the Central Computerized Enforcement Service System (ACCESS) before taking enforcement action that is based solely upon an ALPR alert.

6. Persons approved to access ALPR data under these guidelines are permitted to access the data for legitimate law enforcement purposes only, such as when the data relates to a specific criminal investigation or department-related civil or administrative action.

ALPR DATA COLLECTION AND RETENTION
All data and images gathered by an ALPR are for the official use of the Montesano Police Department, and because such data may contain confidential ACCESS information, it is not open to public review. ALPR information gathered and retained by this department may be used and shared with prosecutors or others only as permitted by law.

We believe these cameras will make our community safer and allow law enforcement some more tools to assist us in holding those who commit crimes within and around our city, accountable thereby providing a sense of justice to the victims.

Please be aware of a Facebook fraud scheme that is surfacing in and around the Montesano area. In the past month, several individuals have responded to items for sale postings on Facebook. These postings are on friend's pages showing different items for sale such as furniture, vehicles, or other household items. Unfortunately, these posts are not true and have not been authorized by the Facebook account holder.

What happens, is that you respond to the post showing interest in purchasing the item. The (friend) suspect advises you to pay for the items or make a downpayment over an internet-based payment system such as VENMO, Paypal, or other payment software. The payment is made and you do not hear from the seller again. The reason for this is that someone hacked the friend's page and used their profile to fake a sale to obtain payment.

Our advice is that if the seller is someone you know, call them or meet them in person to verify they are selling an item. DO NOT call the phone number the Facebook seller (suspect) provides or talk with them via Facebook Messenger or other social media sites they provide to you. These sites may also have been hacked. DO NOT send money via any app. If you are buying an item, exchange all payments in person, to verify the validity of the seller.

When in doubt, feel free to contact the Montesano Police Department for guidance, prior to, exchanging money.

On December 17, 2024, after conducting a two-month investigation that included controlled buys, the Grays Harbor Drug Task Force (GHDTF) served a Search Warrant on a motorhome parked in the 300 block of E. Perry Street in Aberdeen. The suspects, a sixty-seven-year-old Aberdeen male and a sixty-four-year-old Aberdeen male were arrested for selling fentanyl powder and were booked into the Grays Harbor County Jail. The location the motorhome was parked was right across the street from the entrance to Stevens Elementary School. The motorhome was taken from the location and is now stored for possible civil seizure or an abatement process.

If you know of a drug dealer within our County, please contact the Drug Tip Line at 360-500-4141.
