RESIDENTS DECRY DEADLY STATE OF NABUYONGA RISE ROAD IN MBALE CITY

Residents and road users of Nabuyonga Rise in Mbale City have expressed grave concerns about the hazardous state of the road near Hared Petrol Station.

They revealed that the road is riddled with large potholes, which have caused numerous accidents involving boda boda riders and vehicles.

According to the residents, the situation worsens during rainy weather when the potholes become harder to see, leading to frequent falls by boda boda riders, some of which have resulted in fatalities.

"We are in serious danger. At any moment, vehicles could lose control and crash into us," said residents who work near the potholes.

The residents are urgently appealing to the Mbale City Council to take immediate action. "If no action is taken, we will either plant banana plantations in the potholes or block the road," they vowed.

Nabuyonga Rise was constructed under the USMID program and was officially commissioned by the president.

However, the road began to deteriorate after heavy trucks were diverted to use it. This has caused severe damage, leaving the road in its current dangerous state.

The residents are calling for swift intervention to prevent further accidents and loss of life.

*Mbale City Council Begins 1.6-Kilometer Road Construction in Nauyo*

Mbale City Council has embarked on the construction of a 1.6-kilometer road in Nauyo, stretching from Tororo Road to just past Light Primary School, and connecting to Mutoto.

This year, the work will focus on the drainage system, and the road will be compacted with murram. However, in the next financial year, the road will be tarmacked, financed by the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program.

Residents of Nauyo have welcomed this new infrastructure project, which comes after the area was incorporated into the city.

According to Mbale City Public Relations Officer, Kutosi James, the council has not demolished any properties without prior consultation. Most property owners along the road voluntarily removed their structures after several engagements with the council. By the time construction began, all parties had reached an agreement.

However, as in any society, there are some who disagree with the development. For this reason, security was deployed to maintain order during the process. Kutosi acknowledged that while the project has affected some residents, he is confident they will ultimately benefit from the new road once it is completed.

"You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs. Similarly, you can’t have development and improved transportation in Nauyo, where there is a high population, without removing illegal structures built in the road reserve," Kutosi stated.

He further revealed that the structures being removed were either condemned or lacked proper city-approved plans, and thus were illegal. Some individuals, referred to as "fraudsters," had been collecting money from residents, falsely claiming they could stop the road construction.

Kutosi reassured residents that the city council is aware of these fraudulent activities and will address them.
During the ongoing roadworks, a court order was issued to halt the process, but construction is proceeding as planned in Nauyo.

The tarmacked road will feature solar-powered streetlights, which are expected to reduce crime in the area.

Kutosi appealed to the residents of Nauyo to cooperate with the council, as the new road will accelerate the area's development.

Residents have expressed their excitement about the project, stating that it will increase the value of land and lead to better housing infrastructure.

"We urge the city council to expedite the construction so we can enjoy the benefits of a beautiful new road," one resident said.

The Bukonde Twale Muslim council Headquarters in Mbale Northern City has received 350 iron sheets from the Prime Minister's Office.

The donation came in response to a request made by residents of Bukonde Ward through their area Member of Parliament, Honorable Seth Wambede Massa Kizanji.

The request was made to help roof the Bukonde Twale Mosque, the largest mosque in the area and the headquarters for the Muslim community of Bukonde Twale.
Residents had been under pressure to secure materials for the much-needed roofing.

In a statement, Hon. Seth Wambede revealed that the mosque had been in dire need of roofing, and he worked tirelessly to ensure the Prime Minister fulfilled the request.

Thanks to his efforts, the Prime Minister's Office delivered the 350 iron sheets to the Bukonde Twale Muslim leadership and received by Bugisu Muslim leadership.

Hon. Seth Wambede expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja for responding to the needs of the Bukonde Twale Muslim community.

He assured the prime Minister that the iron sheets would be used responsibly to complete the mosque's roofing.

Sheikh Twale, the religious leader of Bukonde, and his followers expressed their heartfelt thanks to the Prime Minister's Office for the generous donation and to Hon. Seth Wambede for his dedication and effort in securing the materials.

"Now that we have received the 350 iron sheets, our mosque headquarters will be roofed, and the community will soon be able to use it," Sheikh Twale stated.

They expressed their gratitude to the Prime Minister for her support and commitment to strengthening the house of worship for the Almighty Allah.

They further appealed to the Prime Minister’s Office to extend similar support to other communities in need.

He assured residents of the Northern City Division that they can always rely on their MP for support in times of need, just as they had seen with the delivery of the 350 iron sheets.

*Uthuman Mugoya Elected Interim Chairman of Mbale Secondary School Alumni Association, Calls for Unity and Integrity*

Mr. Uthuman Mugoya, the newly elected interim Chairman of the Mbale Secondary School Alumni Association, urged all committee members to work together to advance both the association and the school.

In his acceptance speech during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the school's main library, Mugoya emphasized the values of integrity and volunteerism, reminding members that "the school has thousands of former students looking to us.

We must serve with integrity and not treat this as a paid job."

Mugoya also called on all alumni of Mbale Secondary School, regardless of where they are, to unite and strengthen the Old Students Association, highlighting the school's significance as the "giant of eastern Uganda."

Mr. Buyera Moses, Headteacher of Mbale Secondary School and patron of the Old Students Association, expressed his satisfaction during his closing remarks at the AGM.

He noted, "My prayer has been answered. I wanted the two factions to unite and form one body, and this has been achieved.

" He encouraged the alumni, noting that they represent many former students eager to contribute to future projects.

Buyera also reassured the alumni that the school would continue to provide a supportive environment and urged the newly elected committee to work as a cohesive team to achieve their goals.

He mentioned that the school has a strategic work plan and called for collaboration between the school and the alumni association to harmonize efforts in moving Mbale Secondary School forward.

Mr. Sam Kuloba, former headteacher of Mbale Secondary School, former Commissioner of Government Secondary Schools in Uganda, and current Minister of Education, Literacy, and Skills Development in InzuYaMasaaba, also addressed the committee.

He reminded the executive members that their roles are voluntary and require significant sacrifice and personal resources.
He warned against greed and emphasized that the work requires commitment.

Kuloba also touched on the potential for internal conflicts, cautioning that disagreements over leadership or personal issues could cause divisions and lead members to withdraw from the association.
He advised Chairman Mugoya to address such issues promptly if they arise within the committee.

In his final remarks, Kuloba stressed the importance of leadership transitions, noting, "If your term in office has elapsed, just step aside for the new members to take over."

The interim committee of the Mbale Secondary School Old Students Association now consists of 18 members.

They are tasked with running the association for the next six months as they prepare for the next general assembly and work towards strengthening the association's structure.
