The Bugisu Cooperative Union Annual General Meeting gets underway at the union headquarters in Mbale city.

Bugisu Cooperative Union has made steady progress in coffee sales during the current financial year 2023/24, with Elgon Pride sales reaching 377 million compared to 313 million in 2022, marking a 2% increase. Clean coffee sales at the beginning of the financial year amounted to 2.3 billion shillings. The total finances stand at 16.6 billion, slightly lower than the 16.9 billion in 2022. However, Treasurer BCU predicts further sales growth this financial year, estimating sales to reach around 63 billion shillings between January and December 2024.

The union treasurer reported that bursaries have been increased from 200 million to 250 million in 2023 to sponsor more university students, while funding for sports marketing and youth talent promotion has risen from 100 million in 2022 to 150 million.

Acknowledging the challenges faced in previous years due to the impact of COVID-19 on coffee sales, the union treasurer assured farmers of a more stable market, emphasizing the union's diligent efforts.

Several resolutions proposed by farmers have been approved and are set to be implemented, including the establishment of a BCU television station, the formation of a university, and a review of commission and transportation practices to align with competitors. Zonal meetings will now be overseen by zonal directors, and efforts will be made to ensure timely payment to farmers, distribution of coffee seedlings, and the recovery of the Mount Elgon Hotel. Additionally, over 1000 acres of Bunambutye land have been reclaimed, and farmers are encouraged to lease it at a fee of 50,000 shillings.
