Who Is the Real Jesus?
Two thousand years ago a man set foot on our planet who claimed to be from a place beyond space and time.
Although he had no credentials or political backing, his life and words changed our world. His name is Jesus Christ.
While most great people simply fade into history books, Jesus of Nazareth is still the focus of thousands of publications, documentaries and media controversy.
Two billion people today claim to be his followers, yet many still wonder, “Who is the Real Jesus Christ?”
Was Jesus a Real Person?
Although some skeptics have called Jesus a myth, historians acknowledge he was a real person. In fact, nine non-Christian historians and writers mention Jesus within 150 years of his death, the same number who mention the contemporary Roman Emperor, Tiberius Caesar.
In addition to that, over five thousand eight hundred New Testament manuscripts tell us about Jesus’ life and words. That’s far more than for any other person in ancient history.[1]
New Testament scholar, John A. T. Robinson concludes that the New Testament was originally written while eyewitnesses of Jesus would still have been alive.[2]
Regarding the reliability of the accounts about Jesus he states, “The wealth of manuscripts, and above all the narrow interval of time between the writing and the earliest extant copies, make it by far the best attested text of any ancient writing in the world.”[3]
So, who was this man, Jesus Christ, and why was so much written about him?

— Cast your burden on the Lord , And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. (Psalms 55:22 NKJV)
We’re invited, not just to hand over our concerns nicely, but to hurl them upon the Lord. It’s as if we’re shouting, “I’ve had it with this burden. I can’t handle it myself. Here, Lord, you take it!” In throwing our burden to the Lord, we’re really letting go of it. Once we’ve tossed it to him, it’s gone. It’s no longer ours to carry.
God is there, not only to help with our challenges, but to sustain and nurture us. What a wonderful promise, and an even more wonderful reality.
This prayer of David came in the midst of his very real and serious troubles. His anguish came from a close friend who betrayed him. David’s recourse was prayer, not revenge; he left that to God. He trusted God, knowing his prayer would be heard, knowing his God saves and redeems those who humbly turn to Him. They would not be moved or cast down to destruction as the evil ones would be. (See entire Psalm 55 for context.)
Peter quoted this verse within 1 Peter 3:6-11 to encourage believers to cast their anxieties on God and trust Him because He cares for them. God promises to sustain His children in the midst of the burdens of life. Christ bore our biggest burden, our sin, on the cross already. He is more than able to handle the burdens and troubles we face every day.
But sometimes I feel that the hard, overwhelming troubles of life seem to be easier to cast on the Lord because I have nothing within myself that can manage or navigate those trials. I know that I need Him in times like the loss of a loved one, major health issues, financial and relational sorrows… However, lately, I’ve seen how this promise is valid also for the day-to-day burdens of life we face. Those anxieties are what we are to give to God as well. God loves to care for His children and loves it when we turn to Him for help, even in the mundane, little things that make up our lives. We need to rely on Him rather than try to do things in our own strength. As Corrie Ten Boom said: “Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be made into a burden.”
Burdens trying to get you down? Pray, sing a hymn of praise, shout unto the Lord or do like David did, dance before the Lord with songs of praise and worship.
God can give us a strong heart beat again if we could only trust and believe that He is able to not only see us through, but carry us through also.
Commit your way unto the Lord and see if He won't do just what he said concerning you in His Word.
Believe it or not, our test, trials, burdens, etc are no match for our God. One spoken word from God can erase years of pain and suffering.
"When your heart is heavy and burdened and you can't see your way through, while you are going through trials and testing and don't know what to do. There's a friend above who watches and He cares what happens to you.This wonderful One is Jesus and He will see you through."
