"Kabale hospital without oxygen for six months"

Kabale Regional Referral Hospital has been operating without oxygen for about six months after two oxygen processing plants broke down. To bridge the gap in health service delivery for patients in need of oxygen, the administrators spend about Shs3.5million per month to transport oxygen cylinders from Kampala.

The Kabale District Health Educator, Mr Alfred Besigensi says that the breakdown of oxygen processing plants at Kabale hospital has affected all lower health units in Kigezi region since they have been getting supplies from the hospitals.

"UK’s Rwanda asylum deal suffers another setback"

In November 2023, the UK Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the Rwanda scheme was unlawful. It said genuine refugees would be at risk of being returned to their home countries, where they could face harm. This breaches the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which prohibits torture and inhuman treatment.

The House of Lords on Wednesday defeated the government and reinstated demands for greater protections of the asylum seekers.

"Land wrangles top major legal problems, says report"

A new report released in Kampala yesterday shows that land wrangles form the biggest part of the daily legal needs of Ugandans. The report dubbed “Justice Needs and Satisfaction in Uganda 2024” shows that 42 percent of the people have been involved in land disputes.

Land disputes are the most severe, especially among older individuals over the age of 40.

"How proposed Anti-counterfeit law will affect you"

The draft law does not only prohibit the sale and manufacture of counterfeit goods but also seeks to punish anyone who packages, labels or imports such goods.

The private member’s Bill drafted by Mr Asuman Basalirwa, the Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament, proposes to, among others, introduce a 10-year jail term for anyone, who violates the major objectives of the Bill.

"Extreme heat at work can double stillbirth – study"

Working in extreme heat can double the risk of stillbirth and miscarriage for pregnant women, according to new research from India. The study found that the risks to mothers-to-be are significantly higher than previously thought.

The researchers used what is called the wet-bulb-globe-temperature, which measures the effects of temperature, humidity, wind speed, and radiant heat on human bodies.

"Four Equity Bank staff remanded over Shs62b fraud"

Five people, among them four employees of Equity Bank in Uganda, have been remanded to Luzira prison on accusations of money laundering regarding the disbursement of Shs62 billion worth of unsecured loans to unqualified persons.

The five suspects were Wednesday arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Magistrates Court presided over by Abert Asiimwe who read to them charges ranging from obtaining credit by false pretence, money laundering and conspiracy to defraud.

"Busia school fire: Families of victims get Shs5m each"

The government through the ministry of education and sports has given Shs5 million to each of the families that lost a child in the fire that burnt a school dormitory in Busia District, eastern Uganda to help with burial expenses.

The state minister for primary Education, Ms Joyce Kaducu, threatened to close all schools that have failed to meet the minimum required standards set by the ministry.

"Man jailed 70 years for killing his police lover, student girlfriend"

A 22-year-old man who used his female police lover's gun to kill her before stabbing his other student girlfriend to death has been sentenced to 70 years imprisonment. Dennis Arinaitwe pleaded guilty to the double murder charges under the plea bargain where he hoped to get a lesser sentence.

"Court adjourns Rakai school fire case as witness fails to show up"

Justice Nakintu adjourned the case to March 20 when the state is expected to present witnesses for further hearing of the case. The accused persons were further remanded to Masaka Central Prison.

The prosecution led by Mr Noah Kunya last week presented 50 documents that the state intends to use as evidence in the case.

"Don’t register non Ugandans in NRM yellow book, minister warns party registrars"

The State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Mr David Bahati, who doubles as Kabale District National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairman has warned the party registrars against registering non-Uganda or under age persons as party members.

Registration and register update exercise for the ruling party members is slated to kick off on March 13 ahead of the 2026 general election.

"Govt makes U-turn on meat ban in Kampala"

Through a March 1, 2024, letter to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), the Commissioner Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Anna Rose Ademun, directed all local authorities under KCCA to enforce a quarantine restriction on the movement of cattle, goats, sheep and their by-products within Kampala.

Minister Kabanda in an interview with this publication on Sunday said the Prime Minister, Ms Robinah Nabbanja, had halted the implementation of the ban as government continues to assess the impact of the disease in capital city.

"Jinja Hotels unclassified to host global conferences, says UTB"

According to Mr Ochieng, to host international conferences, the minimum requirement is a 3 Star which Jinja hotels do not have allegedly because their owners are not ready to meet the grading classification standards to host national and international conferences.

The Buyende District Tourism Officer, Ms Judith Bitali, said besides rating and classifying hotels to meet three-star standards, the quality of workers should also be considered, adding that most of the hotel staff are not professionals.
