Today is World Forests Day. The theme for this year's celebration is _"Forests and innovation: new solutions for a better world"_. This theme highlights the importance of forests in fostering innovation and addressing global challenges. We know well that forests play a key role in conserving life on the planet and are the most biodiverse terrestrial ecosystems, hosting 80% of the world's plant and animal species. They also enable and contribute to improving mental health and preventing disease.

As we celebrate today, let us innovate in our delivery of results knowing well what Albert Eisten once said, "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them". Happy World Forests Day

An estimated close to 20 hectares of eucalyptus trees that were planted in wetlands in Masindi Municipality were November 11, 2022, destroyed in a swoop to implement the presidential directive to evict all encroaches from wetlands.

The operation, the first of its kind in the district since President Museveni issued the directive to evict encroachers from wetlands, was launched at Kirasa Cell in Central Division with Mr. Emmy Ngabirano, the Resident District Commissioner, vowing that all encroachers on wetlands are to be evicted, arrested and arraigned before courts of law.

He also said any crops that were grown in wetlands are to be destroyed to salvage marsh land from drying off.

“We are going to roll out the operation against wetland encroachment in the entire district and those who continue breaching the directive shall be arrested and taken to court.” Mr Ngabirano said.

Masindi Municipal Environment Officer, Mr Fred Kasigwa, said authorities are determined to restore all wetlands that were encroached on in the area irrespective of what kind of crops were grown there to check droughts, floods and other environmental effects brought about by the destruction of the ecosystem.

Ms Olivia Nabukenya, the Masindi District Environment Officer, said the exercise has begun at the right time since the authorities first sensitised people about the dangers of encroaching on wetlands and their effects on biodiversity.

She added that during the sensitisation campaigns, people were informed of the impending eviction exercise; thus, advising them to vacate voluntarily and harvest their crops or else be forcibly evicted.

“We started sensitising people in August this year about the danger of destroying the wetlands and its negative impacts on climate that directs affects human and wildlife and how the government was to evict them besides destroying their crops planted there but they failed to comply. As such, we are not sympathising with the victims.

DISBURSEMENT OF REVOLVING FUNDS TO PDM SACCOs LAUNCHED BY PRIME MINISTER RT HON NABBANJA

"PDM shall integrate the 39% subsistence households into the money economy," said the Premier,clarifying that PDM is not about hand-outs (Akasimo) but capitalisation grant.

The grant to the SACCOs will be used for lending to viable income generating activities in production,processing,marketing,storage in agric.etc

Finance State Minister-General Duties Henry Musasizi said the objective of Pillar 3 is easy access to financing by subsistence households.

According to the Deputy Secretary to the Treasury Patrick Ocailap,members shall apply for loans from PDM SACCOs through their enterprise group at an interest rate of 6% per annum for FY 2022/23.

A total disbursement of revolving fund to the 3,237 compliant SACCOs across the country is UGX 80.924bn.

ALL ROAD BLOCKS ALONG MAJOR ROADS AND HIGHWAYS REMOVED

As you are all aware, all road barriers and roadblocks along highways were removed with immediate effect on the 6.10.2022, following the strategic guidance of the Chief Executive. The removal of all roadblocks will help benefit traders, business dealers and investors who have been complaining about delays, caused by road barriers and road blocks while transporting goods within the country and in transit.

We wish to inform the public and all stakeholders in the road sector that we have fully implemented the zero barrier/zero road block directive, on all major roads and highways, to effectively facilitate this free movement of goods and services.

Therefore, any individual or groups of police officers, who will be found in breach of this directive, will definitely suffer consequences, of disobedience of lawful orders. We also call upon the public, especially transporters, to remain vigilant and report any officers, who continue to mount road blocks with impunity to the National Operations Command Centre at Naguru Police Headquarters, on telephone contacts 0800199699, 0707600773 and 0776999136.

All other safety counter measures for highway robberies, traffic violations, trafficking of persons, or other indicators of crime will be handled by the Integrated Highway Patrol Units on all major roads and highways.
