The International Press Association of Uganda (IPAU) is an organisation of journalists working in Uganda for foreign and international news media. Membership is open to journalists working in Uganda for foreign and international news-media. It is non-profit-making and non-political. The Association holds regular meetings, inviting newsmakers and experts to off-the-record discussions on development

s in Uganda. It also serves as a one-stop shop for communications officers, press attachés or anybody else who wants to make contact with Uganda’s community of international journalists. IPAU is run by an elected committee, currently chaired by Liam Taylor and Grainne Harrington. It is a chapter of the Nairobi-based Foreign Correspondents’ Association of East Africa (FCAEA). Today, on , we join the global call on governments to protect journalists and freedom of the press.

Sadly, according to the Reporters sans frontières / Reporters Without Borders / RSF 2022 World Press Freedom Index (which assesses the global state of journalism), Uganda dropped from 125 to 132 out of the 180 countries monitored.

Reporters Without Borders said 'Journalists in Uganda face intimidation and violence on a nearly daily basis. They are regularly targeted by the security services, the leading perpetrators of attacks against journalists.'

We stand with colleagues around the world facing threats for speaking truth to power, and want to remind governments that !

The The New York Times have done a beautifully written tribute to Sumy. With words from her friends and colleagues Liam Taylor, Michael O’Hagan, and Sally Hayden.

She traveled the world, but she was best known for the photographs she took in Uganda, which brought pathos and humanity to charged subject matter.

Sumy Sadurni was a Spanish-Mexican freelance photojournalist based in Kampala, Uganda. The 32-year-old was a member of the Women Photograph collective and known for her evocative work across the east Africa region. She died in a car accident on Monday.

Today we will be celebrating the life of our beautiful, kind and talented sister, Sumy Sadurni, who died in a road accident on Monday night. She was a wonderful friend, a generous colleague and a brilliantly talented photographer. A memorial service will be held today, Friday 11th of March, at Dancing Cup in Bugolobi. The service will begin at 4pm, and anyone is welcome from 3pm to pay tribute. A zoom link is available for those who can't make it.
