YOUR SMILE IS THE LATEST ANTI-AGING FRONTIER.

When it comes to conversations around anti-aging, teeth is typically at the bottom of the list. But your smile has a huge impact on your appearance: from brightness to proportions to space, experts in medical aesthetics place major emphasis on quality dentistry for a reason.

Patients in search of a smile makeover typically note discoloration, tooth erosion, and tooth grinding as concerns.

When the mouth fails to show teeth, this makes the person look older; increasing tooth show can substantially help in making a patient look younger.

The balance between the bony skeleton (i.e., the teeth and jaws) and the soft tissue skeleton (i.e. skin and soft tissues) is crucial. Their imbalance can result in teeth looking too prominent, create excess shadows on the face, or even result in a downturned appearance.

THE FINAL WORD.
The bottom line is, oral hygiene and gum health are important. And if you’re concerned with your appearance as you grow older, dentistry can help with that, too, working to rejuvenate your smile, non-surgically.

THIS HEART HEALTH MONTH, Remember: HEALTHY HEARTS BEGIN WITH HEALTHY MOUTHS

February is National Heart Health Month, and your oral health and your heart health are much more closely connected than you may think! There is an "oral-systemic" link between the organisms that cause inflammatory gum disease (such as periodontitis) and systemic inflammatory disease (such as atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in the arteries).

As poor oral hygiene is widespread in Uganda by age 34, at most 50 percent of people have experienced periodontal disease.
Brushing and flossing twice a day are important, powerful oral hygiene tools in cleaning tooth surfaces, removing debris and stimulating gums. For some patients, however, it is not enough, as they do not play a role in positively impacting the natural bacteria load in the mouth.

The mouth is the gateway to the body, which means that excellent oral health plays a significant role in our overall health, including heart health.

Research Finds Mouth and Heart Connection
According to a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, patients with improved oral hygiene had a lower risk for atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) compared with those with poor oral hygiene.

Inside Dentistry Magazine also recently cited a study that suggests as many as 50 percent of heart attacks may be triggered by an oral infection. The publication reported the same study "revealed the pathways of specific bacteria from dental infections and showed how they can directly cause heart attacks and strokes. It concluded that it is necessary to classify periodontal disease as a contributory cause of atherosclerosis."

Understanding the crucial link between oral health and heart health is a game-changer in developing treatment plans.

FACTS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT TEETH WHITENING

1. Your Teeth are like Sponges...They absorb.
Your teeth have pores just like a sponge. Anything you put in your mouth that has color will absorb into those pores. Wine, coffee, dark berries, and smoking are extremely active in staining teeth. Over time, the natural color of your teeth becomes darker due to these stains. These stains will never go away unless you actively remove them. Properly formulated teeth whitening gel works by absorbing into your teeth and gently pushing stains out through the pores.

2. Teeth Whitening does not Damage Your Teeth.
Just like aggressive brushing of your teeth, abuse of any kind can be damaging. However, if used as instructed, professional teeth whitening is incredibly safe. The whitening process uses active ingredients to temporarily open pores in your teeth and lift stains. After each whitening session, your teeth naturally remineralize and rehydrate.

3. Stains on Teeth cannot be Removed Overnight.
No product on the market can whiten in a few minutes or a day. Chemically, it is impossible for any whitening agent to safely pe*****te deep enough into the teeth at that speed. If this were possible, dentists would not be paid well to create custom-fitted whitening trays. The truth is that the whitening process can take as few as 4 days and up to several months. Customers with severe stains must be patient with the process and know that each whitening session removes years of stains. Once those stains are gone, it is incredibly easy to maintain.

4. Crowns and Veneers cannot be Whitened.
When artificial caps and veneers are installed, they are created to match the color of your surrounding teeth. The material is created a darker (or lighter) color and can never be changed. Caps and veneers will neither whiten nor stain. Teeth whitening will not damage dental work.

5. The Best Time to whiten Your Teeth is just before Bed as it reduces the opportunity for staining and gives your teeth the night to begin rehydrating and remineralizing.
Immediately after whitening (regardless of the product you use), your teeth are more susceptible to restaining. The pores in your teeth are slightly more open and can more easily allow stains in.

6. Not Everyone's Teeth can be perfectly White.
Regardless of your stains, the natural color (and genetic makeup) of an individual's teeth are set at birth. The only thing a whitening product can do is remove all the stains that have accumulated over time. Unfortunately, most dentists will not tell you this nor will they give you any kind of refund if it doesn't work

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE ADMINISTERED WITH LOCAL ANESTHESIA?

Local anaesthesia involves numbing an area of the body using a type of medication called a local anaesthetic.

These medications can be used to treat painful conditions, prevent pain during a procedure or operation, or relieve pain after surgery.

Local anaesthetics stop the nerves in a part of your body sending signals to your brain. You won't be able to feel any pain after having a local anaesthetic, although you may still feel some pressure or movement. It normally only takes a few minutes to lose feeling in the area where a local anaesthetic is given.
Unlike general anaesthetics, local anaesthetics don't cause you to lose consciousness.

You don’t need to do much to prepare for local anesthesia. Make sure to tell your doctor if you:
1. have any open wounds near the affected area
2. take any medications, especially ones that increase your risk of bleeding, such as aspirin
3. have a bleeding disorder

You’ll be given local anesthesia shortly before your procedure to give it time to start working. This usually only takes a few minutes. While you shouldn’t feel any pain, you might still feel sensations of pressure.

Tell your doctor right away if you start to feel any pain during the procedure. They may need to give you a higher dose.

Local anesthesia usually wears off within an hour, but you may feel some lingering numbness for a few hours. As it wears off, you might feel a tingling sensation or notice some twitching.

RISKS & SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED

Local anaesthetics are generally very safe and serious problems are rare.
You may have:

1. Some discomfort when the injection is given
2. Tingling sensation as the medication wears off
3. Possibly some minor bruising, bleeding or soreness where the injection was given

Some people experience temporary side effects from a local anaesthetic, such as:

a) dizziness
b) headaches
c) blurred vision
d) twitching muscles
e) continuing numbness, weakness or pins and needle

These problems will usually pass, but you should tell the healthcare professional in charge of your care if you experience any.
But in high doses, local anesthetics can have toxic effects caused by being absorbed through the bloodstream into the rest of the body (systemic toxicity).

In very rare cases, you could have an allergic reaction to the local anaesthetic or develop serious problems, such as fits (seizures) or a cardiac arrest (when the heart stops pumping blood around the body).

SHOCKING! NEWLY BORN BABY WITH TEETH

Teething is a normal part of a baby’s development during the first year of life. Most babies get their first tooth between 4 and 7 months of age. The first teeth that poke through the gums are the central incisors, which are located on the bottom front.

While most infants get their first teeth months after birth, some babies are born with one or more teeth.

It can be a shock if your baby is born with teeth. But you don’t need to worry or take action unless the teeth interfere with feeding, or are a choking hazard. Your pediatrician can help advise you about what to do.

WHY AM I MORE DEPRESSED AFTER TOOTH LOSS?

The first thing people notice when they look at someone is their face. People with good smiles and friendly looking features are considered more approachable than those who hardly smile.
There are numerous psychological effects on tooth loss. Tooth loss problems could affect every persons overall well being and lifestyle.

EFFECTS OF TOOTH LOSS.

Although losing teeth creates problems such as difficulty in chewing, drinking or speaking, the emotional problems that come with tooth loss are way greater and should not be ignored.

The most significant psychological effect on tooth loss is the loss of self-confidence and increased low self esteem that an individual experiences. This is because with missing teeth, an individual would not be able to express him or herself fully as they are shy or embarrassed. Approaching new people of the opposite s*x would also be a problem, as the self-confidence would be greatly reduced. Many researches have showed that 67% of people who have difficulties accepting tooth loss experience low levels of confidence.

Having missing teeth or tooth can be damaging to new friendships or relationships. With social media, meeting and developing friendships and romantic relationships has been made easier. Most people with tooth loss problems would feel embarrassed and anxious to have the first in person introductions if the friend, girl or boy does not have prior knowledge of the tooth loss problem. Meeting the family of a partner would also be a difficult thing to do as the confidence of the individual is lowered because of the tooth loss.

As missing tooth can affect a person’s jawbone, the facial appearance of a person can change greatly. The effects of missing or diminishing bone due to tooth loss can lead to a person looking older than they actually are. This physical effect because of tooth loss can make a person ashamed to leave the confinements of his or her own home thus making the individual very antisocial and to an extension, affect things like their job and education. This is because they would not want to go into the public space for far of embarrassment.

Conclusion.

Psychological effects on tooth loss must not be looked over. People suffer so many emotional problems connected with losing teeth through old age or many other different complications.

ARE YELLOW TEETH UNHEALTHY?

Plaque can build up if you don't brush and floss properly or don't visit the dentist often. On the other hand, yellow teeth may simply be an aesthetic issue – as in the case of teeth stained by food and drink or to***co – and not necessarily a sign of poor oral health. Even a healthy diet may cause some staining.

Yellow teeth seem to get a bad reputation and are usually associated with poor oral hygiene. Fortunately, we have some good news for those who lack those pearly whites.
Yellow teeth are actually stronger than bright white teeth!
