In June 2023, our Business Reporter, Vincent Owino, brought you a special report exploring how the blockchain industry, particularly cryptocurrency, contributes to climate change in Kenya. He interviewed local Bitcoin traders and environmental experts, who highlighted the significant carbon footprint of Bitcoin mining. The report prompted the tabling of a bill in parliament aimed at regulating the blockchain industry. Subsequently, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) collected Sh10 billion from cryptocurrency traders during the financial year ending June 2024. Vincent's work earned him the Best Environment and Climate Change Reporting (Print) award at the 2024 Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA).
