Each hill has historic significance, with sites such as the Rubaga Cathedral, Namirembe Cathedral, and Makerere University, one of Africa's oldest and most prestigious institutions.

The name “Kampala” comes from a Luganda phrase “Kasozi k’empala,” meaning “Hill of Antelopes,” referring to the impalas that once roamed freely in the area.
