LORD Collins, the UK parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Africa, has expressed satisfaction on the ongoing investments at the Dar es Salaam port, noting that these efforts have significantly improved the unloading and offloading of cargo.

Speaking to journalists shortly after touring the port yesterday as part of his two-day visit in the country, he said his visit is meant to strengthen relations in trade, investment, clean energy and health.

“This enhancement is not only boosting national revenues but also facilitating trade expansion, thereby contributing to overall economic growth and the circulation of goods,” he said, affirming that considerable improvements in port infrastructure make it highly attractive.

The Dar es Salaam port serves as a model for the East African region as it connects Tanzania with landlocked neighboring countries, even as further improvements will lead to increased productivity, he stated.

THE Public Investments Committee (PIC) wants the Public Service Social Security Fund (PSSSF) to expedite work on the Kilimanjaro International Leather Factory Karanga in Moshi Urban District, Kilimanjaro Region.

Augustine Holle, the parliamentary committee chairman, said during a visit here yesterday that the fund needs to rise the factory’s progress from 25 percent at present to 100 percent, a view seconded by state minister Ridhiwani Kikwete (Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disabilities in Prime Minister's Office), while top PSSSF officials aired a different view.

Committee members visited the project, airing the view that the completion of the factory will enable realising intended benefits. “We have come to see if invested capital, including over 150bn/- from the government, is yielding results and if it has followed the guidelines and regulations,” the committee chairman noted.

“We have visited the factory step by step and discovered that this investment is beneficial and should be emulated as it brings both social and economic benefits,” he said, noting that upwards of 3,000 jobs will be created once the factory is completed while revenues have increased.

BY the end of the 2023/24 campaign, Young Africans attacking midfielder Stephane Azizi Ki had reached stratospheric heights.

His influence extended beyond domestic competitions, as he played a crucial role in helping Young Africans qualify for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals, cementing his place as one of the best players in CAF inter-club competitions.

DODOMA Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule has directed the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) to increase the number of ticket scanner machines to avoid jams at the exit gate of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station in the city.

Senyamule issued the order yesterday after inspecting the station and observing the delays caused by the small number of ticket-checking machines during departures.

“President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s development of the SGR is a significant positive step, but we now hear complaints of insufficient ticket scanner machines,” Senyamule said.

She directed that the exit gate should be separated for cars and motorcycles to help reduce the traffic jam.

ZANZIBAR doors are open for Italian investors to invest in various sectors, including setting up electricity generation plants, Zanzibar authorities have declared.

Sharif Ali Sharif, the Labour, Economy and Investment state minister in the President's Office, made this affirmation on Monday when meeting with a delegation of Italian businesspeople who were in Zanzibar to explore investment opportunities.

He said that in the past four years significant developments have taken place, including amending investment laws tied with the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA), making substantial improvements to align with the current investment climate.

ZIPA serves as a one-stop center where investors can complete all investment procedures in just two days and obtain the necessary approvals to begin project implementation, he said, asserting that Zanzibar offers a favourable and secure investment environment with political stability prevailing, making it a highly regarded location for various investment projects.

AS it celebrates its 30th anniversary, marks yet another milestone with the resounding success of the Samia Infrastructure Bond, surpassing its initial target by 115 percent and raising 323bn/-, more than double its original goal of 150bn/-.

Mohamed Mchengerwa, the Regional Administration and Local Governments state minister in the President’s Office (PO-RALG), commended CRDB Bank for this remarkable achievement, emphasizing the significance of the 323bn/- raised, which more than doubles the initial target of 150bn/-.

Achieved within just one and a half months, this success reflects strong investor confidence in CRDB Bank, reinforcing its position as a leading financial institution in Tanzania, he said.

Named in honour of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the bond underscores CRDB Bank’s commitment to national economic growth and individual prosperity. The funds raised will support the timely completion of urban and rural road infrastructure projects, benefitting citizens across the country.

THE Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA), in collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies, has destroyed 336 acres of cannabis farms within Ikome forest reserve in Kondoa District, Dodoma Region.

Aretas Lyimo, the DCEA commissioner general, said on the sidelines of that operation yesterday that the operation is a significant step in the fight against drugs.

The cannabis was intentionally mixed with other crops to conceal illegal activity, he said, noting that 148 kilograms of khat were seized during the operation.

"This is the first major operation of its kind in Dodoma, clearly indicating that cannabis cultivation is spreading in parts of the region,” he said, vowing robust measures to control the production, trade and use of drugs with all available resources.

19/02/2025

HIGH speed internet services will improve significantly in the next three years as the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) starts to license spectrum in prime bands from next July.

Dr Jabir Bakari, the TCRA director-general, said at a press conference yesterday that TCRA has released a draft information memorandum for stakeholder engagement that outlines the licensing of four spectrum blocks in the 3600-3800 MHz band by auction.

Set for July 10, holding a spectrum band auction will mark a strategic step in enhancing high-speed internet access across the country, with successful bidders required to extend their services to at least six administrative regions by 2028.

By the end of 2033, they will have set up a presence at the key urban centres of all administrative regions, he said, noting that the draft memorandum includes regulatory and policy objectives for auctions.
