BELGIUM has expressed its support for the clean cooking energy campaign, ready to collaborate with Tanzania in its Africa-wide propagation, the government has stated.

Deputy Prime Minister and Energy minister Dr Doto Biteko reached this accord with Belgian Energy minister Tinne van der Straeten at a continental conference to discuss the use of hydrogen in electricity generation, held in the Namibian capital of Windhoek.

The use of hydrogen parallels exploration of other clean energy sources including natural gas, especially as President Samia Suluhu Hassan champions the use of natural gas to replace charcoal burning and firewood.

The conference is discussing energy alternatives for the development of the entire African continent, with a plethora of issues to be addressed, as to the focus of domestic energy and industrial energy generation, officials said.

Tanzania has become a demonstration zone for deepening high-quality Belt and Road cooperation between China and African countries, Chinese President Xi Jinping has declared.

The view was expressed at a meeting with President Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday, on the sidelines of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

He emphasized that Tanzania is where China first put forward its Africa policy for the new era, as the two leaders discussed various ways to strengthen cooperation.

Various African leaders are in Beijing for the China-Africa Forum Summit, where the Chinese leader cited the Dar es Salaam Consensus jointly issued by Chinese and African scholars in Tanzania back in March.

Tanzanian economists have called for the removal of trade barriers between China and Tanzania to promote a fair balance of trade.

Their suggestions came ahead of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), set to take place in Beijing from September 4th to 6th this year.

FOCAC serves as the main platform for China to provide resources to African countries, offering support through debt forgiveness, aid grants, concessional loans, and interest-free loans.

Dr. Nassib Mramba, a Senior Lecturer at the College of Business Education (CBE), emphasized the importance of bilateral trade agreements, including the adoption of the Chinese Yuan for trade transactions.

He noted that such agreements would facilitate smoother trade between the two nations, reducing barriers for both exports and imports.

Currently, the balance of trade is unequal, with China exporting significantly more to Tanzania than it imports from the country.

THE government has been urged to review electricity prices following the completion of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) to provide relief to consumers, the legislature has demanded.

Masache Kasaka (Lupa) asked in a supplementary question in the National Assembly why the government had not revised electricity prices despite the completion of the major power project.

Currently, the average price for one subsidised unit of electricity is 100/- (for normal usage of up to 75 units per month) while without subsidy the cost stands at 292/- for a unit, official figures show, while for consumers using more than 75 units per month, they pay 292/- per unit with subsidy, instead of 320/-.

Judith Kapinga, the Energy deputy minister, explained that electricity costs encompass production, distribution, transmission and preliminary investment costs, while current electricity prices include government subsidies designed to reduce the burden on specific sections of consumers.

THE Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) has reported a significant increase in cargo at the port of Dar es Salaam, with the number of containers rising from 7,151 in April to 20,151 in July this year.

Amos Makala, the ruling party secretary for Ideology, Publicity and Training was at the port as Josephat Lukindo, the TPA operations and coordination manager, outlined the investor’s drive to boost efficiency, as DP World invested in modern machinery through its Dar es Salaam subsidiary.

The key factor is a $250m by the Dubai-based global port management operator, to improve operations at berths 0 to 7, as a section of the port facilities was shifted to DP World in April.

The work included repairing existing equipment and acquiring new assets such as 20 tractors, 31 trailers, seven 10,000 KV generators for backup power and cranes for heavy cargo handling, the manager noted.

UNPAID debts to contractors, suppliers and service providers came up as a major debating issue in the National Assembly yesterday, with MPs calling on the government to address the matter urgently.

Bupe Mwakang’ata (Special Seats) said during the question and answer session that the government will pay contractors and suppliers in Rukwa Region awaiting payment for up to five years.

The various individuals have faced severe financial hardship, including asset seizures due to delayed payments, she said, noting that many contractors and suppliers have had to borrow from banks to complete their work, yet the government has not paid them on time.

“As a result, numerous individuals have lost their homes and vehicles. When will the government settle these debts?” the MP demanded, pointing out that numerous debts have been verified for over six months but remain unpaid, with arrears ranging from two to five years.

TANZANIA has nearly 3,000 patients suffering from kidney failure, with the government spending between 56bn/- to 80bn/- annually on dialysis supplies to ensure a steady supply of treatment drugs and caregiving.

Dr Omari Ubuguyu, assistant director of non-communicable diseases at the Health ministry made note of this situation in Dar es Salaam on Thursday at a workshop on media awareness on non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Collective efforts are needed to enhance awareness to prevent the NCDs challenge and in delivering treatment, he said, pointing at the critical role of the media in educating the public on the situation, similarly expressing concern about the spread of misinformation.

The Tanzania Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance (TANCDA) organised the event which brought together experts, disease campaigners and representatives from various media outlets, with the ministerial director affirming that 70 percent of the 3,000 individuals face major health issues related to high blood pressure and diabetes.

29/08/2024

Debit cards have become a way of life for many consumers. When you use a debit card, the purchase is deducted directly from your checking account. There are two ways to use a debit card; through an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) where you can withdraw cash or through a Point of Sale (POS) that accepts your type of debit card.

The majority of the banks offer MasterCard or Visa debit cards which offer convenience and versatility. Also, debit cards are great because there is no chance of spending more than you have hence no overdraft fees charges for you if you “Opt-Out” of overdraft protection.

However, this convenience and savings of overdraft fees come with certain risks and dangers that you need to understand before using your debit card freely.

The other type of bank card is a Credit card; the main difference between credit cards and debit cards is that, whatever you spend on the credit card, you will have to pay back, while with debit cards you are spending your own money.

AS Africa's youth population continues to grow, with one billion projected to be aged between 15 and 35 years by 2063, food processing offers a sustainable avenue for youth employment, a French-backed study has indicated.

Dr Ousmane Badiane, executive chairman of Akademiya 2063, and co-chairman of the Malabo Montpellier Panel which conducted the study, the first university being in Equatorial Guinea and the second on the French south coast, said that a growing class of wealthier, time-constrained, mostly urban populations in Africa was looking shelf-stable, ready-to-eat, ready-to-cook, or easy-to-prepare processed foods.

“This demographic pattern is changing the types and amounts of food in demand, and the food processing sector must advance rapidly to keep pace,” he said.

The continent's urban population is projected to increase from approximately 43 percent of total population in 2020 to 60 percent by 2050, with the middle class projected to account for 42 percent of the population by 2060, the report noted.

29/08/2024

THE National Assembly yesterday passed the Aviation Act of Tanzania 2024, set to enable substantial reforms in the country's aviation sector, strengthening the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA).

Transport minister Prof. Makame Mbarawa, who explained the bill in the National Assembly, stated that the purpose of the proposed legislation is to establish a robust legal framework for the management operation, and development of airports.

The bill addresses challenges faced by the TAA as the sole agency responsible for airport management, as the bill seeks to involve the private sector in improving airport infrastructure.

This arises from, the fact of recognizing that substantial financial investment is required to further develop the sector, while introducing provisions for offenses and penalties against individuals found in possession of fi****ms or explosives in a controlled or prohibited areas.

NATIONAL Assembly Speaker Dr Tulia Ackson has declared that if current practice of detaining people arbitrarily by district and regional commissioners continues, the law empowering them to do so would merit a review.

She issued this position when Mlimba MP Godwin Kunambi raised an urgent matter demanding that the legislature discuss actions of some RCs and DCs arresting people and detaining them for no reasonable cause, “as the situation puts in peril observance of human rights.”

Pointing at an incident in his constituency, he said that on Monday (August 26) the Kilombero DC visited Chiwachiwa village, beset with a land dispute pitting the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) and village residents.

He was asked by a councillor to verify the boundaries as the villagers believe they are within boundaries of their own zone, whereupon the DC ordered the arrest of village leaders, the councillor and 11 residents “who are still in custody,” the MP narrated.

News PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed dismay over a report from the Treasury Registrar that public organisations charged with doing business contribute only one percent of gross domestic income.

Opening the second meeting of board chairmen and heads of public institutions in Arusha yesterday, she said that the organisations should at least contribute 10 per cent, demanding that “we should ask ourselves how we feel about this.”

Laying emphasis on the need for domestic organizations to reflect on how to increase efficiency and effectiveness to achieve these goals, she said that public institutions that have failed to manage and advance various development projects hand over those projects to the private sector for further development.

“If you have failed to run or manage these projects, give them to the private sector to use or sell them. Return our money so we can use it elsewhere; why should we keep it when we don’t have the capability? Let them use it and return our money so we can handle other matters,” she told the gathering.

A NEW report has revealed that approximately 69.4 percent of workers in the country are employed without formal contracts from their employers.

The 10th Business and Human Rights Report launched by Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) in Dar es Salaam yesterday also found that women and people with disabilities are main victims of human rights violations in the business sector, particularly in accessing employment and services tailored to their needs.

The report shows a 4.8 percent increase in labour and employment opportunities compared to the 64.6 percent reported in the previous year, 2021/2022.

It indicates that only 37 percent of workers are aware of the existence of trade unions in the country. Other issues reported include unfair dismissal contrary to national procedures and laws, lack of benefits from social security funds and wages not aligned with current cost of living.

AFRICAN countries have been tasked to use integrated approaches against mosquito-transmitted diseases now on the rise across the continent.

He emphasised on the need to enhance scientific and technical knowledge on the surveillance and control of mosquito vectors of emerging arboviruses, described in an online entry as infections caused by a group of viruses spread to people by the bite of infected arthropods (insects) such as mosquitoes and ticks.

“These infections usually occur during warm weather months when mosquitoes and ticks are active,” the entry affirms, while the WHO executive said that a total of 61,073 cases and 71 deaths were reported from 18 countries from the diseases this year, up to end of July

BETWEEN 30 and 40 public institutions and agencies that have failed to operate sustainably without relying on government subsidies are to be dissolved during the current financial year, the government has indicated.

Nehemia Mchechu, the Treasury registrar, said this at a press briefing ahead of a workshop for board chairmen and chief executives of parastatal organisations starting today.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan will officiate at the opening of the workshop, intended to review the status of institutions that fail to contribute to government revenue, while there is a need to reduce dependency on government funds.

The Treasury Registrar’s office expects to see a decrease in the number of institutions reliant on government support, for instance as regards salaries and operational costs.

VICE President Dr Philip Mpango has urged the police, specifically the traffic unit, to tighten control over school buses.

Officiating at the national observance week for road safety and 50 years of the National Road Safety Council, he said that many of the buses do not meet road safety standards and are operated by unqualified drivers.

The police need to step up regulatory controls on school buses as many are not fit for road use, he elaborated, specifying that many such buses carry more passengers than their capacity, and the drivers lack proper qualifications.

He cited the case of an accident last April 12 in Arusha, where seven children died from driver negligence, saying that the police need to ensure that all drivers, especially those with licenses, observe all road driving safety regulations.
