But Liang Yuan-chao is now making a name for the store with his exciting reinvention of traditional treats. Products like chocolate dragon’s beard candy are bringing a modern twist to old-time recipes. Liang says he made the switch partly to get out of the rat race, but also because these traditional skills are too precious to lose.

Japan to allow registering ‘Taiwan’ in marriage documents
Many Taiwanese who have married Japanese nationals are currently listed as Chinese nationals on official documents in Japan. But that will no longer be the case starting May this year. The government of Japan will allow Taiwan to be used on official forms, which will now allow the registering of countries and regions. Applications will also open to rectify documents issued previously. The change comes after a years-long campaign by a Japanese national married to a Taiwanese woman.

Taoyuan’s airport MRT line inundated by riders attending the Lantern Festival event
The Taiwan Lantern Festival is being held in Taoyuan this year. On its first day on Saturday, huge crowds overwhelmed the city’s MRT stations to get to the event. Those who opted to take taxis instead also found themselves waiting more than an hour, while those who drove were stuck in traffic on the highway. The city added more MRT trains on Sunday, which it hopes would prevent a repeat of the congestion, before the event comes to a close next weekend.

Two days after the deadly gas explosion at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in Taichung, a dash cam video from a car that was near the site of the blast has been made public. It shows the frantic drive by a retired bus driver surnamed Tsai, who took an injured toddler and her parents into his car and brought them to an emergency room. Along the way, the driver ran red lights and drove in a bus lane so that he could get the little girl to the hospital before it was too late. A lawyer said what normally would be deemed reckless driving would be justified in this case, because a human life was at stake.

Taoyuan celebrates lantern festival together with 16 sister cities
Representatives from 16 countries on Wednesday attended the grand opening of the Taiwan Lantern Festival, which this year is being hosted by Taoyuan. The city brought together sister cities from all over the world to take part and experience the unique charm of the festival. The event featured performances by groups from countries including Japan, the Philippines and South Korea. In the exhibition area, a lantern showcasing Belize has brought a Central American twist to the festival.

Lai holds national security meeting amid Trump tariff threats
US President Donald Trump has frequently mentioned tariffs on various foreign products. That includes a 100% tariff on Taiwanese semiconductors, as he claims that Taiwan stole America’s chip business. On Thursday, Trump seemed to soften his tone, saying there would be no tariffs if Taiwanese companies set up shop in the US. A rattled Taiwan has responded with caution. On Friday morning, President Lai Ching-te presided over a meeting of his national security team to discuss countermeasures. Present were Premier Cho Jung-tai and ministers in charge of defense, foreign affairs and finance.
