Dr. Chen Yao-chang, one of Taiwan’s first bone marrow transplant doctors and a pioneer in stem cell medicine—a man who healed with his left hand and wrote with his right.
He passed away at 76, having saved countless lives in hematology and stem-cell therapy while leaving a powerful literary legacy. His 2016 novel Puppet Flower, which received the Taiwan Literature Golden Award, became the original work for the series
Seqalu: Formosa 1867.
Writing Taiwan from a multi-ethnic perspective, he helped the world see this island’s histories and wounds more clearly. For more on his “Formosa dream,” see our feature “The Stem Cell Expert and His Formosa Dream” in the comments.
