Mayhem At Greenvale Meeting

The scheduled meeting at Greeenvale between the residents affected by the recent flooding and HDC and Government officials began at 630pm. There was a full turnout of the affected residents, while the Government was represented by Ministers Sinanan and Dillion along with HDC representatives and the Ministry of Social Development staff. It was announced that MP Maxie Cuffie was in attendance but no resident saw him in the meeting and he did not participate in the meeting. Approximately 500 persons attended the meeting.

Prior to the commencement of the meeting residents asked the Social Development officials about when they would get the cheques as not all residents were given on the occasion with the Minister. The residents were rudely answered and told that not to ask them when as they did not know. This set the tone for the meeting.

The meeting eventually began with addresses by the two attending Ministers, which was then followed by open discussions by the residents. The second question was from resident Naveeta Ramdass who asked about the deferrals or waiver issue and a re-evaluation of the market value of the Greenvale property. An HDC representative responded that there will be no waiver but only a deferral of payments for three months. Minister Dillon indicated that an evaluation of the market value of the properties after flood will be undertaken and residents will be subsequently advised. These answers did not sit well with the residents.

After these initial questions the meeting soon degenerated into mayhem as the Ministers obviously had no responses to answer the questions of the residents. The passionate residents asked about the plans of the Government if there was another flood. Minister Sinanan responded that the Government was evaluating the situation and this answer did not satisfy or alleviate the fears of the residents.

The residents hurled insults at the Ministers almost in every comment made. Ministers were told that they were sleeping dry and sitting smug in their stupid shirt at the head table. Ministers were visibly shocked by the residents’ responses and hostility as they expected a hero’s’ welcome after what they thought was adequate support given to Greenvale.

Another resident Kerri Cassimally indicated that the Manuel Congo bridge repairs had blocked the river and that caused flooding not only in Manuel Congo but also Greenvale. Ms. Precilla Chickoree another Resident indicated that those who only had licence to occupy were not covered by the Insurance only those who were converted to mortgages. Ms. Chickoree told the audience that when she went to HDC for a read out of her payments she was charged by the HDC. The Government had no response to the issue of rental deferral and Minister Dillon indicated that he would ask HDC to refund the $50. Those who were renting from HDC asked about a deferral of rental but no answer was heard. Questions were also asked about when they would begin repairs to affected homes to this Minister Dillon indicated next week. The Ministers also indicated that the relief government would be capped at $20,000 which conflicted with Minister Stuart Young stated following the floods. Residents asked what about the $75,000 that Minister Young spoke about.

One resident who recently paid off her mortgage asked HDC to buy back her house as she no longer wanted to live in Greenvale. HDC indicated that it had no interest in buying back any house in Greenvale. Another resident asked about relocation as they refused to go back to which they bypassed the question and only was prepared to say they are considering all solutions. One particular resident cited a newspaper article quoting Minister Camille Robinson Regins indicating that approvals for Greenvale was turned down twice and asked if they could confirm this. The officials refused to answer this question.

It was self-evident from the meeting that the Rowley Administration had failed the residents of Greenvale in the aftermath of the flooding. The help that was promised by the Government has not materialized to assist the residents. The residents were deeply concerned that given the threatening skies that there is no plan by the Government to deal with a similar occurrence.
