Congratulations to a daughter of the soil

The Executive and Directors of the TWG extend heartiest congratulations to NourbeSe Philip one of eight writers being awarded the Windham-Campbell prize.
She was one of the persons instrumental in our founding and development and was involved in the early discussions about our book Tobago In Print

A Tobago-born poet, writer, playwright, essayist, M. NourbeSe Philip is an independent scholar, and former lawyer.
Her published work, poetry, fiction, essays, and playwriting have garnered her prestigious awards such as the PEN Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature as well as the Canada Council for the Arts Molson Award for her contributions to the arts in Canada.

She is both a Guggenheim and Rockefeller (Bellagio) Fellow. In 2018, NourbeSe Philip, using her seminal long-form poem Zong! as a tool of incantation and memorial, created in collaboration with a dancer and musicians The Moveable Shrine, a public ceremony performed to “re/turn” selected pieces from the Royal Ontario Museum’s African collection.

She is among eight writers awarded US$175,000 each by the Windham-Campbell Prizes to support their work and allow them to focus on their creative practice independent of financial concerns.

A media release said the Windham-Campbell Prizes are a major global prize that recognizes eight writers each year for literary achievement across four categories – fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.

With annual prize money exceeding US$1.4 million – and total prize money awarded over the past decade at over US$18 million – they are one of the most significant prizes in the world.
