A bit of normalcy has returned to Linden Guyana, after a deadly day of protests.

While burnt debris remained on the roadways yesterday, there were no demonstrations.

The tensions began when 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters, was shot and killed by police on Monday afternoon.

As police responded to protestors, Keon Fogenay, who grew up on the same street with Mr. Peters in Wismar, Linden, was killed.

The two men were both fathers, and were shot and killed by police in the mining town hours apart.

Yesterday, family members of the dead called for calm.

They welcomed a visit from president Irfaan Ali.

The president travelled to linden and met with the families of both men.

He said, injured police officers are also being cared for.

After the meeting, the families urged residents to keep the peace, saying they are sure that justice will prevail in the two cases.

Secondary Entrance Assessment begins at schools across the country.

It is estimated that about 18 thousand standard five students are writing the examination this morning.

A number of security measures have been put in place by the authorities to ensure a smooth exam process.

All primary schools and some select secondary schools were closed yesterday for security checks.

Education Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby Dolly has extended her best wishes via facebook.

Both the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission and the Water and Sewerage Authority, have set up hotlines to treat with any utility emergencies that can affect the process.

In extending the best to the young boys and girls Chairman of the National Council of Parent Teachers Association Walter Stewart recalled that this group would have had online schooling due to the pandemic.

He thanked the teachers for the roles they played.

Mr. Stewart encouraged the students and noted that the parents are also to be commended.

Meanwhile a total of 1,006 students—551 boys and 455 girls—have been registered to sit the exam in Tobago, including 34 private candidates.

These students will write the examination across 40 designated centers on the island.

This country’s bid to monetize Venezuelan gas suffers a blow as the Donald Trump administration revokes the license, which allows it.

However Prime Minister Stuart Young says, dragon gas deal is not dead.

The office of foreign assets control of the U.S department of the treasury, commonly called OFAC, administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions, based on U.S foreign policy and national security goals.

Countries must acquire approval, which allows for economic relationships with regimes under U.S sanction.

Trinidad and Tobago received an OFAC license to extract gas from the dragon fields, in Venezuela in January 2023.

Prime minister Young told the media yesterday the move by the United States was no surprise.

The dragon gas field is situated on the, Venezuelan side of the northwestern maritime border with Trinidad.

It is estimated to hold up to 4.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserve.

Meanwhile, the chief secretary of the Tobago house of assembly responds to the revocation of the OFAC licenses calling it unfortunate.

Farley Augustine also laments the way in which other countries can determine the future of, Trinidad and Tobago and smaller territories.
Blaming the people’s national movement for the state of the economy, Mr. Augustine said, diversification is needed now more than ever.

He advances a suggestion of his own.

Mr. Augustine was speaking at a political meeting in Plymouth last evening.

An eighth case of malaria is confirmed.

The Ministry of Health says, this was revealed following enhanced surveillance efforts in south Trinidad.

A statement from the Ministry of Health says, the case was identified by the Insect Vector Control Division, as part of ongoing monitoring under the Ministry of Health’s malaria prevention and control protocols.

The ministry says, malaria is not currently endemic to Trinidad and Tobago.

However, between 2015 and 2024, health authorities recorded 153 confirmed cases, an average of 15 per year, with most being imported or introduced from abroad.

Malaria is a vector-borne disease caused by plasmodium parasites, transmitted by female anopheles mosquitoes, which tend to bite at night.

Unlike dengue, chikungunya and zika, malaria is not spread by a virus, and the aedes mosquito is not its primary vector.

Attempts will be made by stakeholders in Tobago to again get interests from Sandals owners, to set up a Sandals Resort on the island.

There is a promise to the people of Tobago from Prime Minister Stuart Young, that he will do all in his power to ensure a return of the Sandals interest, which failed several years ago.

Today, Prime Minister Young, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine and other stakeholders will meet with executive chairman of Sandals and beaches resorts, Adam Stewart.

Prime Minister Young made the announcement at Thursday’s post cabinet news conference.

It followed a call by, former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, last month for the Chief Secretary and Tobago stakeholders, to seek to convince the Sandals executive chairman to return to Tobago.

Addressing a rally of the People’s National Movement, at the Signal Hill Secondary School on Sunday evening, Prime Minister Young promised the same level of delivery to Tobago as happened under his predecessor.

Noting that the new airport terminal is only part of the plan, he also promised jobs for Tobagonians once the deal with Sandals is successful. The prime minister then asked supporters for permission to negotiate.

On the weekend Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, again sought to explain the reason for the Sandals failure.

Mr. Augustine was addressing a political meeting of his Tobago People’s Party.

Chief Secretary Farley Augustine responds to a voice note currently in circulation on social media.

He says, it is not the first time he has been the target of such campaign tactics.

Mr. Augustine says, it reminds him of what happened in previous election campaigns.

The Tik Tok video purports to be a recording of an exchange between, the Chief Secretary and the Opposition Leader.

The voices on the video discuss a transfer of funds to the Tobago People’s Party in the run up to the last THA election.

Speaking at a TPP meeting last Saturday evening, Mr. Augustine dismissed the audio.

Mr. Augustine said, it was not a one-off tactic.

The T.P.P leader insists, he does not have time for foolishness.

He was speaking at a rally of his Tobago People’s Party in Crown Point on Saturday night.
