Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22 in support of environmental protection. Implementing measures to preserve and protect the environment is essential and HADCO’s Recycling Division has been an active contributor and participant in several environmental initiatives.

Ecoimpact Co. Limited is responsible for collecting, sorting and baling wastepaper and cardboard for the purpose of recycling. They are also responsible for the collection, processing, and recycling of Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) to be re-used in the production of alternative fuels, as well as the recycling of Lead Acid Batteries. These activities together divert a significant amount of waste material from entering our nation’s landfills and waterways.

This year’s Earth Day theme is “Our Power, Our Planet”. Let’s take a moment to reflect on how our actions impact the planet and understand that we have the power through our choices to create a safer and cleaner world.

Happy Earth Day!

This year's commemoration of the United Nations' "International Day of Zero Waste," is truly one that we are excited about because the theme is, "Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles." As an island that is full of colour, vibrant energy and charisma, it certainly is a great topic for meaningful discussions, which should include a focus on how the global fashion industry is the second biggest source of environmental pollution. Once a battery is no longer useful, the type and chemistry of the battery determines how it is disposed of. This is important because some batteries can cause a risk to safety and health if mismanaged at the end of their lives.

Please call us at Ecoimpact today to assist with your disposal.

Bonus: Did you know that batteries carry enough energy to cause injury or start fires after being disposed of or appear to be discharged?

Don't dump those old lead-acid batteries yourself. Instead, call Ecoimpact today!

Apart from being illegal, the dumping of used lead-acid batteries into rivers, abandoned lots or landfills results in corrosion and the release of harmful toxins into our soils, groundwater and air.

Be wary because symptoms of lead poisoning can include stunted growth and brain development in small children and foetuses, while resulting in kidney failure, anemia and cardiovascular diseases in adults.

On Monday, we collected 30 gallons of used cooking oil from Queen's Park Savannah following the National Panorama Semis. By assisting with the responsible disposal of these oils, our team has helped to decrease the chances of our soils and waterways being polluted. When used oils are thrown into grass or drains, it can lead to poor soil quality and flooding. Wider effects can also include the breeding of pests and the spread of diseases.

Following what was undoubtedly one of the biggest and most electrifying savannah parties to date; yesterday's National Panorama Medium and Large Band Semi-Finals at Queen's Park Savannah, our team is on the ground collecting kegs of waste vegetable oil (WVO) from various food vendors and trucks.

Each keg holds 5 gallons of WVO which will be transported to our factory in Diego Martin for processing and subsequent export.

While Trinidad and Tobago's carnival is promoted as "the greatest show on earth," there is an urgent need to educate our schools, communities and businesses more about how we can come together to re-position the festival and all outputs as environmentally friendly.

Today's info-graphic seeks to inspire greater dialogue about how the festival (and similar celebrations) pollutes our waterways and by extension, poses risks to the overall health and wellness of life in water and on land. Let's continue taking more collective action to ensure that we preserve and enhance life on earth.
