‘Everything is in the detail of Lot 306 at Sotheby’s by Jean-Léon Gérôme… the exquisitely captured folds of the skirt, the light pouring through the latticed window. The measurements are a diminutive 35.5 by 25cm. The estimate for this gem of a painting unsurprisingly £150,000 - 250,000. For any museum without its Gérôme this is the one to hanker after.’ Cornucopia Connoisseur.

These new additions are beautiful to look at and a pleasure to read. Journey to the Çoruh valley with Brian Sewell and the great photographer Simon Upton. The late Patricia Daunt travelled with Simon to the amazing chestnut wood mansions of Çamlihemşin. Number 13 is the famous (and now rare) special issue on the Turkish garden. Scott Redford writes about the Seljuk gardens of the Mediterranean, John Carswell on the flowers that decorate the famous Rüstem Pasha mosque, and the great botanist Andrew Byfield on the rhododendron flowers of the Black Sea which produce the honey that drove Xenophon’s men mad (“I often smell R. luteum before I see the plant itself, for so powerful is the scent of its musty bitter-sweet nectar that a few bushes can scent a whole valley, he writes). ph.
