‘We complain about how men portray women, but it is equally important how women represent men too. As female filmmakers, we sometimes talk among each other about how, ‘yes, it is a question that we always have to answer’. However, it is always important to address this, for the sake of future next generations.’

Producer, director and writer talks to our editor-in-chief about her last film Carta a mi madre para mi hijo, Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales short film series and the theme of this issue “Impersonatopia”.

‘I always considered the street a stage where we, the actors, are performing in the decor of the city. In daily life, we are performing social roles and we wear the appropriate mask for that.’

In Out of Place, examines human psychology while pursuing the cultural details transpiring in the streets of New York, São Paulo, Seoul, Mumbai, Hong Kong, London, Lagos, Istanbul, and Mexico City.

From the collaboration of a family, comes the magical snaps of a dream. In Through the Lens of a Prankster, Hyunmin Ryu invites us all to meet with his nephew Kim-sae and his experiences with daily life.

“Ryu mostly works on things that are familiar and relevant to him. Staging moments from daily life and mixing-in some familiar details to reveal unique creations is one of the things he does best. His work covers subjects ranging from relationships to ex- istential absurdities and limitations. Hyunmin is simultaneously an explorer and an inventor – he plays both of these roles, without compromising his unique nature, as a prankster.”

Expressing the clash of cultures, Lamrabat’s colourful universe opens the gate for a whimsical and well thought experience.

“Lamrabat subverts beauty and gender norms with finesse and a sense of drama. Each photograph contains as many stories as the number of viewers, creating a fan- tasy world, while simultaneously keeping the subjects vividly real. There might be an infinite number of definitions of normal, yet Lamrabat’s work takes the entire concept of normal and smashes it to smithereens. What remains is a giant puzzle, waiting to be completed – perhaps a metaphor for life itself ?”

How would one define solitude? Acclaimed photographer and International Competition 2021 Winner ’s ongoing series “Out of Place” combines different cultures from the streets of London, New York, Mumbai, São Paulo, Istanbul, Lagos, Hong Kong, Seoul and Mexico city, unfolding the primitive reflexes of modern people.

‘The metropolis life [sic] is the modern equivalent of the primitive man’s struggle against nature. Rat- her than running for our lives, we now have to run after our jobs. We are not running away from existential threats, but unwanted consequences of exclusion. The struggle remains the same.’

“If we were impatient and told you about Alina Frieske’s work by just praising oil painting and the illusion it creates, it might not feel strange initially, but it would definitely be misleading. It appears that her explorative spirit has driven her towards a style where she works with photography as a material, using collage as a technique, finishing her work with the use of bold painting effects.”

21st-century metropolises have grown to gigantic proportions, when compared to the ancient Greek city-states. In ‘Out of Place’, Bas Losekoot photographs these urban sprawls, as he juxtaposes the private and autonomous space of the individual. His work provides the audience with new insights into the current state and diversity of human beings.

Lisa Sorgini, an Australian photographer and mother of two, found herself con- fined to her home with her children, unable to work, when the lockdown began in March 2020. The artist succeeds in the challenging task of showing fatigue, love and compassion in the same frame. The warm tones, plain complexions and soft touches that dominate each frame, breathe life into Sorgini’s photography.

By venturing into the ‘forest’ – a concept associated with going against the norm, since Shakespeare – these women also remind us of the limits of freedom in the modern world, the roadsides that serve as migration corridors, the changing face of our forests, and the women who keep up their struggle.

Weronika Gęsicka studied graphic design and photogra-phy in Warsaw. In Traces (2017), she uses vintage photos from online archives besides images from 1950s American adverts, magazines and news- papers. She ingeniously transforms moments in time, often by ridiculing the American dream, represented by a gleeful family residing in a detached house with a garden, or by conjuring-up a more sinister side to its rose-coloured outlook to life.

Annelie Vandendael's compositions blend the bizarre with the amusing, through their use of striking details – but perhaps most notably, they sidestep the issue of objec- tification by stripping the subjects of their identities.

By the mid to late 1980s, the artist’s visual language began to explore the more grotesque aspects of humanity through the lens of horror and the abject, as seen in works such as Fairy Tales (1985) and Disasters (1986-89).
