ON THIS DAY a year ago, Akram Afif became the first ever player to score a hat-trick in an
Asian Cup final. 🎩

He scored three penalties against Jordan to help Qatar win back-to-back Asian Cups and take his tally to eight for the tournament, winning himself the Golden Boot.

In doing so, he also became just the third player to score 8+ goals in a single edition of the tournament after Ali Daei (1996) and teammate Almoez Ali (2019).

Record breaker 👏

TODAY IN FOOTBALL HISTORY

10 February 1957

ON THIS DAY 68 years ago, Egypt won the inaugural match of the Africa Cup of Nations, beating Sudan by the score of 1-2 at Sudan's Khartoum Stadium. The win put the visiting Egyptian side right into the Final, as only four teams had been invited to participate and one was disqualified before ever playing a match.

The Cup of Nations was organized by the fledgling Confederation of African Football, itself formally established just earlier that month. At that time, the CAF had only four members--Egypt, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Sudan--and expected that all four would participate in the Cup. The South Africans, however, still under a policy of apartheid, refused to send a mixed-race side to the tournament and were disqualified as a result. South Africa's expulsion meant that their scheduled opponents, Ethiopia, received a bye in the semifinals and automatically qualified for the Final.

In the one semifinal match that was played, Egypt took an early lead with a 21st-minute penalty kick from center forward Raafat Ateya. Sudan equalized shortly after the break with a goal from Siddiq Manzul in the 58th minute before Egypt's Mohamed Diab El-Attar ("Al-Diba") put his side ahead for good in the 72nd minute.

The Final was never in doubt, as Egypt rolled to a 4-0 win. All four goals came from Al-Diba, making him the tournament's highest scorer.

The tournament is played every two years and has since expanded to 16 teams, who are determined by qualification rounds involving all 54 CAF members. Egypt has remained the most successful nation, with seven titles in nine Final appearances, including an unprecedented three consecutive titles in 2006, 2008, and 2010.

TODAY IN FOOTBALL HISTORY

10 February 1991

ON THIS DAY 34 years ago, Zinedine Zidane scored his first professional goal to help Cannes beat Nantes.

Nineteen years old at the time, Zidane had been with Cannes since joining them as a youth player in 1986. He signed a professional contract with them in 1989 and made his first-team debut against Nantes that May, one of only two appearances that season.

He didn't play for the first team at all the next season, but featured regularly in 1990-91, making a total of 31 appearances across all competitions. His only goal, though, came in a 2-1 league win over Nantes. Afterward, club chairman Alain Pedretti gave Zidane a car, honoring a promise he'd made to the midfielder for his first scoring strike.

Zidane left Cannes for Bordeaux in 1992, then spent time with Juventus (1996-2001) and Real Madrid (2001-06) while becoming one of the world's greatest players. He went on to score a total of 125 goals in 681 career club appearances, while winning the Ballon d'Or in 1998 after leading France to victory in the World Cup.

TODAY IN FOOTBALL HISTORY

9 February 2010

ON THIS DAY 15 years ago, Amy Fearn became the first woman to referee an English Football League match when she took charge of the last 20 minutes of Coventry City's contest against Nottingham Forest.

Despite the recent controversy that saw Sky Sports analysts Andy Gray and Richard Keys lose their jobs after making sexist remarks against Premier League assistant referee Sian Massey, England's Football League has used female officials since 1991, when Wendy Toms served as a reserve official for a Third Division match. Toms later worked as an assistant referee in both the Football League and the Premier League, and also refereed matches in the non-League Football Conference starting in 1996.

But no woman had ever been the primary official in England's top four divisions until Fearn. A financial analyst for Rolls Royce who has worked as an official since she was 14, Fearn had worked League matches as a referee's assistant since 2006. And she was again filling that role for the Coventry-Forest match when, with 20 minutes left, the match's originally-assigned referee, Tony Bates, left the pitch with a leg injury. Fearn then took the whistle and her place in history.

The match ended as a 1-0 win for Coventry. Although Fearn heard a few taunts, she shrugged them off, saying afterward "I just laugh and take it with a pinch of salt." Coventry striker Clinton Morrison praised Fearn, saying "There was no dissent when she was in charge and no bad language. It would have been interesting if there had been any controversy but there wasn’t because she did a very good job. There is only one thing that matters about the person in charge and that is how good a referee they are."

TODAY IN FOOTBALL HISTORY

9 February 1979

ON THIS DAY 46 years ago, Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough introduced the press to his newest signing, English striker Trevor Francis--the first player in England to break the £1 million transfer fee barrier. Clough added to the spectacle by showing up at the press conference in a bright red leather jacket with his squash racket in hand.

When Clough signed Francis from Birmingham City, he was careful to set the transfer fee at £999,999 in order to prevent the "million pound" mark from going to the striker's head. But taxes pushed the total fee over £1.1 million, more than doubling the previous record of £495,000, paid by Manchester United to Middlesbrough for defender Gordon McQueen in February 1978.

With Francis in the side, Forest lost only one league match for the remainder of the season, finishing second in the Division One table, and won the League Cup. The crown jewel in their season, however, was their 1-0 win over over Swedish side Malmö in the 1979 European Cup Final, with Francis heading in the winning goal.

That proved to be the highlight of Francis' career. Injuries hampered his time at Forest, preventing him from playing in their win in the 1980 European Cup Final, and he moved to Manchester City in 1981 for £1.2 million.

TODAY IN FOOTBALL HISTORY

8 February 2015

ON THIS DAY 10 years ago,Ivory Coast ended years of frustration to claim their second African Nations Cup crown following a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Ghana in the final.

The Elephants, whose only previous triumph in the competition came back in 1992, looked set for their third final defeat in nine years when they fell 2-0 behind in the shootout after the teams played out a drab goalless draw after 90 minutes and extra time.

But Ghana fluffed their lines and Ivorian goalkeeper Boubacar Barry would become the hero when he first saved opposite number Brimah Razak's penalty before stepping up to score his spot-kick and seal a climactic 9-8 success.

Led by Herve Renard, Ivory Coast could have easily been reduced to 10 men on the quarter-hour mark.
Serey Die's high studs up challenge on Wakaso Mubarak left its mark on the then Celtic winger but only earned the Ivorian a yellow card.

Ghana's Christian Atsu scored the first goal for Everton, despite Ghana defender Baba Rahman's penalty for giving Gervinho possession.

Ghana continued to grow in confidence and ended the half on top, with Andre Ayew striking the outside of the woodwork with his cross-come-shot.

It was a game of very few clear cut openings, though, and that continued into the second half.
Ghana avoided a 10-man deficit after a tangle between John Boye and Eric Bailly ended in a goal. Ivory Coast's Serge Aurier's low strike was saved by Ghana goalkeeper Razak. The match went into extra-time, with Ghana's Jonden Ayew and Frank Acheampong replacing Ivory Coast's Salomon Kalou and Junior Tallo. Tensions escalated when Ivory Coast shot-stopper Barry fell with cramp.

But, at 8-8, he made the decisive save off Ghana keeper Razak and after another brief stoppage, Barry stepped up and slotted home to seal wild Ivorian celebrations in Estadio de Bata.
