Mozambique's ruling party, Frelimo, has won the country's divisive, violence-marred election, extending its 49-year grip on power in the southern African nation, the election commission has announced.

Daniel Chapo, Frelimo's relatively unknown presidential candidate who has been seen as an agent of change, will replace Filipe Nyusi, who has served two terms.

At 47 years old, Chapo, who gained 71% of the vote, will be the first president born after Mozambique's independence in 1975. His closest challenger, Venancio Mondlane got 20%.

The election has been marred by allegations of rigging and the killing of opposition supporters, prompting protests across the country.

In a positive turn of events, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has officially announced the reinstatement of the national U17 team in the ongoing WAFU tournament. This comes after a successful appeal following concerns raised over the MRI test results of five players during the tournament in Senegal. A retest, conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the West African Football Union (WAFU), confirmed that two of the players in question passed the required threshold as per the U17 Africa Cup of Nations regulations.

The SLFA expressed gratitude to fans for their support and thanked CAF and WAFU for ensuring transparency. The U17 team now has the opportunity to represent Sierra Leone with pride on the continental stage.

Orange Sierra Leone slammed for poor service delivery!

Sierra Leone’s National Communications Authority (NatCA) has promised to invoke certain relevant provisions of the National Communications Authority Act, 2022 against one of the mobile network operators Orange for failing to comply with a one-week deadline given to them to improve their quality of service.

Director General of NatCA, Amara Brewah has informed the CEO of Orange about numerous complaints received from customers across the country about the poor quality of service experienced as a result of your poor network performance.

Amara Brewah said: “Our assessment of the numerous complaints points to drop calls, TCH and SDCCH congestion, network available and many more”.

The Company has been urged to take reasonable steps to remedy these anomalies within seven (7) days from the receipt of this letter.

Sierra Leone's Correctional Service reports that a total of 1,376 inmates, who escaped from detention during the prison break of November 2023 attempted coup, are still at large and being searched for.

Acting Director General of the Correctional Services, Brigadier General, Sahr D.T. Ngaujah said as of November 26, 2023, a total of 1,919 inmates were in custody.

He said 1,890 inmates escaped, 514 recaptured and 90 voluntarily returned.

Mr. Ngaujah assured that the authorities are actively pursuing the escapees still at large, emphasising the need for effective law enforcement collaboration.

Sierra Leone responds to Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers WAFU Zone A disqualifier!

Crucially, ahead of the Sierra Leone opener on 21st of October, a Press Release from the Competition Department of the WAFU A confirmed that the Team has been disqualified alongside Guinea and Guinea Bissau.

The reason is that 5 players from Sierra Leone failed it MRI Test.

CAF Medical Team in a statement said: "As the regulations of the tournament state, if after carrying out the eligibility test (MRI) for a participating team, four or more of its players are deemed ineligible, the participating team will be disqualified."

Sierra Leone's Football Association said they have launched an official appeal to challenge the results and requesting the names of the said players.

The Association said it has called for a retest as they believe the outcome of the pre-test at the EcoMed Advanced Medical Diagnostic in Freetown is reputable, adding that this is not the first time and that the same pre-test procedure was used during the tournaments in Senegal (2020) and Mourintinia (2022) where the team achieved a 100% pass rate.

Kenyan senators have voted to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office despite his failure to testify at his impeachment trial after his lawyer said he had been taken to hospital.

In one of the most dramatic days in Kenya's recent political history, Gachagua had been due to appear in the Senate to defend himself, a day after he had pleaded not guilty to 11 charges.

However, Gachagua, popularly known as Riggy G, did not show up and his lawyer requested a postponement saying his client was suffering from chest pains and was being treated by doctors at The Karen Hospital.

Senators chose to continue the trial without him, prompting the defence team to leave the chamber.

Hotel staff made two calls to emergency services in the moments before singer Liam Payne fell to his death from a balcony in Argentina.

A caller appearing to be the chief receptionist, said they had a guest who had taken "too many drugs and alcohol", and was "trashing the entire room", before the line cut out.

In the second call, the same caller warned the guest's life "may be in danger" as the room had a balcony, and asked the 911 operator to send someone "urgently".

Medics and local authorities were sent to the the CasaSur Palermo hotel, Buenos Aires, where the former One Direction star had been staying.

On Tuesday, authorities made a significant bust at the Wanjama Checkpoint along the Bo-Kenema Highway, where a truck was stopped, and 71 parcels along with 7 bales of suspected Cannabis Sativa were confiscated.

The truck, bearing the registration number AJM 150, was allegedly transporting the illicit substances from Moyamba Junction to Kenema.

In connection with the incident, police have arrested Haja Bundu, a resident of Burma One, Kenema.

The case is now under active investigation.

One Direction star Liam Payne has died after falling from the third floor of a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.

Police say they were called to the hotel after reports of an "aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol".

Payne fell from the balcony after officers arrived - hotel workers were worried about Payne's safety beforehand, the transcript of the 911 call reveals.

Fans have been gathering outside the hotel to mourn the 31-year-old's death - lighting candles and singing One Direction songs.
