DESIGN / Banyan House
A Country Villa in Cambodia Provides a Perfect Off-the-Grid Getaway
SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA / Looking for a perfect escape from noisy, chaotic and fast-paced city life? Here’s a country villa immersed in nature’s grace. Known as “Banyan House”, it reconnects with the physical world in a way that’s visually pleasing. The brainchild of Asma Architects, a Siem Reap-based architectural firm, it’s achieved by integrating natural materials, colors and patterns in the design, culminating in a peaceful home that inspires a sense of space in nature and freedom in every movement.
“Banyan House” is the story of a contemporary rustic dwelling whose name depicts a scene of renewed vitality and well-being beneath the crisp, cool canopy of healthy trees. There are lush lawns hemmed in by green foliage that offer a quiet spot to relax and unwind in nature. To avoid disrupting natural energy flows, every precaution is taken to reduce detail in the basics, thereby creating in a light and airy place that has less impact on the environment.
As people try to get away from the chaos of city life, teeming streets and overcrowded places, “Banyan House” comes in handy as a haven of peace and tranquility. It’s a place to relax, recharge and wake up fully rested. Beyond everything, the positive effects of nature will benefit us all. Check this out.

HAPPENING / Get ready! Anakata Fest is making a grand return this year with an exhilarating architecture conference experience you won’t want to miss—mark your calendar for December 7, 2024!
JAKARTA, INDONESIA / Anakata Fest, an architecture and design festival organized by Anakata Series, will be held again this year. Presented in a mini series format, Anakata Fest in 2024 carries the theme “DIVERSE” which will present several speakers from different countries with their respective expertise in architecture.
Anakata Fest mini series will be held at Titan Center, Bintaro on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 12:30 to 19:00 (GMT+7). In this event, there are several showcases from event supporters such as Cosentino Asia, Sandei, and Estica International. In addition, the speakers' presentation as the core event of Anakata Fest, will be featured at the Theater Hall.
The theme “DIVERSE” is a representation of 2024 where architecture and design come and are created from various concerns, problems, ideas, creativity, collaboration, goals, and many things that are worthy and interesting to discuss. And also, through this theme, the speakers in 2024 look very different, in terms of office, personality, design, and project scale.
The Anakata Fest mini-series will consist of two parts, the first is “Process & Purpose” presented by Jeravej Hongsakul from IDIN Architects (Thailand) and Kevin Mark Low from smallprojects (Malaysia).
The second part "People & Process" will be presented by Erick Laurentius from Pranala-Associates (Indonesia) and Brandon Hng with Dominic Gaetani from DKO Architecture (Vietnam & Australia).
Unlike the previous year, the Anakata Fest mini-series brings a new experience for architecture conferences, especially in Indonesia. Anakata Series tried to give the sensation of an experience 'like going to the movies' by giving access for participants to choose their own seats with a seating system and contributions for this event were given on a 'pay as you wish' basis. In this event, there are 414 seats as the maximum capacity of Theater Hall that can be selected through the official website fest.dsignbit.com.
With speakers from several countries, participants from various backgrounds, and parties that support Anakata Fest, it is hoped that it will be able to establish new relationships, create various discussions, or expand references in the scope of architecture and design in Indonesia.
The Anakata Fest mini-series is happening at Titan Center, Bintaro, on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 12:30 to 19:00 (GMT+7). Don't miss out!

DESIGN / Ton Corner Coffee Shop
A Backstreet Café in Hue Embraces the Beauty of Ordinary Materials
HUE, VIETNAM / There are plenty of good reasons to visit Huế, the former capital of Vietnam. Rich in history and cultural heritage, it’s home to imperial palaces, holy shrines and a wealth of architectural treasures. Who would have thought there’s a cute small café tucked away in a backstreet far-removed from the teeming thoroughfare of the city center?
Named Ton Corner Coffee Shop, it’s constructed using basic, locally sourced materials, a strategy that matches a short-term rental agreement. Plus, the area is prone to seasonal flooding during heavy rains. That’s exactly the challenge that tests the ability of the design team at TON Architects, an architectural firm based in Huế. And the final outcome is worthy of admiration, thanks to well-thought-out design aimed at creating a good customer experience.
In a nutshell, Ton Corner Coffee Shop is a perfect example of what makes a building comfortable even though there are problems on site. The answer lies in an awareness of the surroundings, knowledge of materials, clever building strategies and, most important of all, forward thinking. The same concept can apply to both commercial and residential design. In this particular instance, using simple, readily available materials can translate into big savings and reducing human impacts on the environment.

Bangkok, THAILAND // Like a journey through time, the sight of the royal barge procession evokes a page of history going back when Ayutthaya was the capital of a powerful Thai kingdom formerly known as Siam. The city is located along the fertile flood plains of the Chao Phraya River and its tributaries. It’s easy to get why transportation through rivers and canals was central to shaping the lifestyle and culture of this riverine society.
A work of outstanding artistry, skills and craftsmanship, the royal barge procession is a living embodiment of royal status and hence highly formalized, majestic and steeped in symbols and traditions. It represents the reigning monarch’s power and moral righteousness that inspire viewers with a feeling of reverential respect and a manifestation of a deity on earth. Needless to say, it provides the opportunity for the king to observe events and care for his subjects.
Looking back over the years provides valuable insights into the royal barge procession. It’s an inheritance that has continued across several reigns from Ayutthaya to Thonburi to Rattanakosin periods. It’s still practiced today, yet some things never change. The royal barge procession will always be poetry in motion, exquisitely beautiful, and existing for a purpose – keep traditions going and cherish our roots as we look to the future.

DESIGN / Baba Yaga Restaurant
A Restaurant Beautifully Renovated to Blend with the Surroundings
DA NANG, VIETNAM / A restaurant housed in an old building has been renovated to provide a unique experience for diners. It’s wrapped in a new envelope of tree branches with organic shapes designed to blend into a beautiful setting in Da Nang, a city in central Vietnam. Named Baba Yaga Restaurant, it’s an architectural masterpiece that values materials found in nature, one that seeks reconnections with its physical environment.
Situated at the intersection of two streets, Baba Yuga Restaurant is the brainchild of Duoitancay Concept, a design studio based in Da Nang. The old building has 436 square meters of usable space. In front of it stands a row acacia trees that are commonplace in tropical regions. As the architect and the property owner intended, they go to work improving air quality and providing shade making the atmosphere inviting, cozy and cooler during summer months.
In short, Baba Yaga Restaurant is a renovation project that brings out the best in the architects who create it. As a rendezvous for communities, it’s a spacious, positively clean place where people meet, enjoy good meals, foster relationships and make memories. More than anything else, it’s well-thought-out design inspired by nature that gives it a decided plus.

HOUSE / TNOP House
A Mountainside Retreat Affords a Good View of Rural Chiang Rai
CHIANG RAI, THAILAND / This secluded country retreat in Chiang Rai belongs to a graphic designer who loves spending time in nature as a way to find inspiration and spark creativity. Nestled in a valley among the mountains, it’s a place in which to rest, relax and have a break of the hustle and bustle of the big city. At the risk of stating the obvious, building on a slope can be challenging and hence a lot of effort was put into planning and design. The house facade is set in open land with scattered groups of trees abutting a highway, while the building itself is built on the sun-facing hillside overlooking lush rice fields that turn gold when it’s time to harvest in winter, a sight to behold to say the least.
From this vantage point, the view is breathtaking. And that’s precisely where a design team from IS Architects comes into play. Their job: overcome construction site obstacles and create a place that’s beautiful, safe and comfortable to live. The result is a modern country house that blends with the local way of life so as to become indistinguishable from it. Where appropriate, parts of the steeply inclined hillside are adjusted to create an ideal setting for the house and landscape design. Overall, the house plan is simple yet functional with indoor and outdoor spaces arranged according to levels of importance.
In short, nature has always inspired artists and thinkers. In this particular instance, it has given the homeowners and architects the tools they need to deal with many challenges that occur on site. The result is a home that looks and feels good, plus it combines a contemporary style with elements of folk architecture in a neat and organized way.
