DOH ATHAN | December 26 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Indian ocean tsunami. Over 220,000 people were killed across 14 countries. In southern Thailand, Myanmar migrants were called “the forgotten victims” of that tragedy, but there are some still there who remember that day and miss those who were lost.

EVENT: Please join us in Chiang Mai on Friday, December 13 at 6:30pm for a night of art and storytelling from The Kite Tales.

The Kite Tales was founded in 2016 by journalists Thin Lei Win and Kelly Macnamara to record the lives of ordinary Myanmar citizens. After the coup, the project established a fellowship to financially support several Myanmar journalists and illustrators, and to give them a place to anonymously share their thoughts, hopes and fears about life under military rule.

On Friday, at our Chiang Mai community space Greenhouse, Thin Lei Win will speak about the project and display 20 illustrations from it, along with QR linking directly to the personal stories and journal entries that inspired them.

“These Resistance Diaries are more vital than ever as international attention on Myanmar diminishes,” the founders write. “They offer a rare and poignant window into the personal and professional struggles faced by journalists and storytellers committed to exposing the military regime’s brutal abuses.”

This event is open to all, but Frontier members are encouraged to RSVP to [email protected] for a free drink ticket. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
