Hello everybody.
Obviously, big congratulations for all of you in blue. It’s a big day for everybody, not just for the graduating 71 class of ’23, but a huge day for the parents as well. As a parent of the recently graduated, I know how proud you must feel today, tinged also with a sense of relief that you’ve managed to reach this day. Congratulations also to the teaching staff; big day for you. This is the product of your hard and excellent work, so very well done.
I may be a politician, but I promise I will be brief. One thing that’s obvious today is that it is a happy day. A happy day for most of you, but a happy day that will be tinged with a bit of sadness as well, I’m sure. Obviously happy because you’ve finished your A-Levels recently and you’ll be moving on to bigger and almost certainly better things. But tinged with sadness because pretty soon you’ll be leaving a place that you’re familiar with, saying goodbye to many faces that you’ll be familiar with.
But for all of you, I’ve got good news. And even for those of you, if we’re entirely to be honest, some of you who not necessarily have felt that you have been entirely fulfilled so far by school. The good news for everybody is that where most of you will be going on to next is university. Life will be even better. It’s a chance to reboot, start again. It’s a fresh canvas, and it’s a very much bigger canvas. So for all of you who may not yet feel entirely fulfilled, the chances are at university, you’ll be meeting people of like minds, meeting soulmates, you’ll be discovering what your true passions are. These are the promises that awaits all of you.
I recall still my first week at university at Oxford. In the first week, one of the things that we have to do is we’re asked to go into a little pep talk, it’s a one-on-one pep talk, with one of the dons. During that pep talk, I remember an important piece of advice that was given to each of the newbies. The advice is that at university, there are really three main options that you can choose from in terms of what you do and how you spend your time at university.
The first option — the most obvious one: study hard. The second option is that university is an opportunity, as the headmaster just mentioned, to find and follow your passion. That might be in sports, that might be in the arts, that might be in journalism, politics, whatever it is. But find your passion and delve into it. And the third option, also obvious, that is just to just party hard and have a good time. These are the options that were laid out to all of us new intakes at Oxford back in 1982. And we were further advised that if we wanted to achieve a good degree, a first class degree, then we would be advised to choose just the first option: study hard. But if you were to be happy with walking away with a second class degree, then maybe you can choose the first option — study hard — and one of the other two. But in no account should you try to do all three, unless you are willing to risk getting a third class degree. I have to say that I enjoyed every moment of my time at the university. And that’s the thing. University, if nothing else, will be the first — and the last — truly free time, the first true freedom that you will feel in your life. And that carries important consequences. It means that you need to be very conscious of the decision that you make in terms of how you spend your three years, or your four years, or even your five years at university, because it’s the only true freedom that you’re going to have for the rest of your life.
Now, when I first went up to university, I was a little lost with this freedom that I had. I ended up smoking ci******es because I couldn’t do so before at school, I drank too much, I traveled to London every weekend to join my friends for parties. But I very quickly realized that wasn’t how I wanted to spend my freedom. And I decided that I would use the freedom I had to try to follow up on a particular passion and question that I had in my own mind. And that was in sports. I wanted to know how far I could go in my chosen sport, which was rowing. Luckily, I was at Oxford, so I could do that. So I committed myself for the next 2 or 3 years mainly with a life on the river.
So, whatever you do, and it could be the arts as I said, it could be music, it could be anything, choose carefully, choose consciously, and commit your time to it. Even if you don’t end up being very successful at it, and I wasn’t a very successful oarsman, at least you can use that freedom to learn more about yourself and to follow the passion that you have. Serious life comes after university. It may appear to you today that the most important thing that you need to achieve from now on is getting a very good degree. Well, a good degree is important. But the journey towards getting that degree will prove to be more lasting in terms of its impact on your life. So having a goal is important, but always remember: live the moment. The journey is more important. And serious life afterwards — well, it can wait. There’s no hurry.
Some of you may already know exactly what you want to do with your life. Well, I can assure you, after university, many of you who think you know today will be changing your minds. Many of you will not have a clue what you want to do after university. Well, don’t feel bad about that. I think that’s actually quite normal. The whole thing about university is an opportunity to open our minds. So keep your mind open for new ideas, new opportunities, and start your serious life after.
So before I depart, I want to leave you with one last comment made by one of my favorite sporting personalities, a guy called Rafael Nadal, tennis player. Because I know you’re a little bit nervous today, about the ceremony maybe, probably more about the A-level results you’re waiting for. And then about your life at university, first time away from home for many of you. Well, Nadal said don’t be afraid of nerves. Being nervous is good. It keeps you on edge. It keeps you sharp. I believe that, so stay sharp, be lucky, stay committed, and very good luck for the rest of your life. Come back and help our country. Thank you very much.

สวัสดีครับทุกคน แน่นอนว่าต้องแสดงความยินดีกับทุก ๆ คนที่ใส่ครุยสีน้ำเงิน วันนี้เป็นวันที่สำคัญสำหรับทุกคน ไม่เพียงแค่นักเรียนที่จบปีนี้ทั้ง 71 คน แต่เป็นวันที่สำคัญสำหรับผู้ปกครองด้วย ในฐานะผู้ปกครองของนักเรียนที่เพิ่งเรียนจบ ผมรู้ว่าทุกคนคงรู้สึกภูมิใจขนาดไหน และก็คงรู้สึกสบายใจที่ในที่สุดก็ถึงวันนี้ ผมขอแสดงความยินดีกับคุณครูทุกคนด้วย วันนี้ก็เป็นวันที่สำคัญสำหรับคุณ เป็นผลผลิตของการทำงานที่เหนื่อยและดีเลิศ ทุกคนทำได้ดีมากครับ
ผมอาจจะเป็นนักการเมือง แต่ผมสัญญาว่าผมจะพูดแค่สั้นๆ สิ่งที่ชัดเจนที่สุดคือวันนี้เป็นวันแห่งความสุข วันแห่งความสุขสำหรับทุกคน แต่ก็เป็นวันที่ผสมความเศร้าไปด้วยเล็กน้อย แน่นอนว่าทุกคนคงมีความสุขที่สอบ A-Levels เสร็จ และกำลังจะได้ไปสู่อีกช่วงของชีวิตที่ยิ่งใหญ่และดีขึ้น แต่ก็มีความเสียใจด้วยที่จะต้องทิ้งสถานที่อันคุ้นเคย และบอกลาหลายๆ คนที่คุ้นเคยเช่นกัน
อย่างไรก็ตาม สำหรับทุกคน ผมมีข่าวดีมาบอก และเป็นข่าวดีสำหรับคนที่โดยแท้จริงแล้วก็ไม่ได้รู้สึกเติมเต็มเท่าไหร่นักกับชีวิตในโรงเรียนด้วย ข่าวดีก็คือ เกือบทุกคนจะไปร่ำเรียนต่อที่มหาวิทยาลัย ชีวิตจะดีขึ้น ทุกคนจะมีโอกาสที่จะเริ่มใหม่ คล้ายกับเฟรมวาดรูปที่ยังว่างเปล่า และเป็นเฟรมวาดรูปที่ใหญ่ขึ้นอีกด้วย เพราะฉะนั้น ถ้าใครที่ยังไม่รู้สึกเติมเต็มที่โรงเรียน ก็มีโอกาสสูงว่าที่มหาวิทยาลัย คุณจะได้เจอคนที่มีความคิดคล้ายกัน ได้เจอโซลเมท ได้ค้นพบความชอบที่แท้จริงของตัวเอง ทั้งหมดนี้เป็นสิ่งที่กำลังรอทุกคนอยู่
ผมยังจำอาทิตย์แรกที่มหาวิทยาลัยออกซ์ฟอร์ดได้ ในอาทิตย์นั้น พวกเราทุกคนต้องไปนั่งฟัง pep talk เป็น pep talk แบบตัวต่อตัวจาก Don ผมจำได้ว่าจากที่ผมฟังในวันนั้น คำแนะนำที่สำคัญที่เด็กใหม่ทุกคนได้รับคือ เมื่อเข้าเรียนมหาวิทยาลัยแล้ว ทุกคนมีสามทางเลือกหลักว่าอยากจะใช้เวลาช่วงที่เรียนอย่างไร
ทางเลือกแรก และทางเลือกที่ชัดเจนที่สุด คือการตั้งใจเรียนให้หนัก ทางเลือกที่สองคือการใช้เวลาระหว่างเรียนที่มหาลัยเป็นโอกาสในการค้นพบและเดินตามความชอบของเรา ตามที่ครูใหญ่เพิ่งกล่าวไป โดยความชอบนั้นอาจเป็นกีฬา ศิลปะ การเขียนข่าว การเมือง อะไรก็ได้ แต่ต้องหาสิ่งที่เราชอบให้เจอและไล่ตามมัน สุดท้ายแล้ว ทางเลือกที่สามคือ ปาร์ตี้และก็ทำตัวให้สนุกไปเรื่อยๆ ทั้งหมดนี้เป็นทางเลือกที่พวกเรานักศึกษาปีแรกที่ออกซ์ฟอร์ดได้รับในปี 1982
พวกเราได้รับคำแนะนำด้วยว่า ถ้าเราอยากจะเรียนให้ได้ first class degree (เกียรตินิยมอันดับหนึ่ง) เราก็ควรจะเลือกทางเลือกแรก และตั้งใจเรียน แต่ถ้าเราพอใจกับ second class degree (เกียรตินิยมอันดับสอง) เราก็อาจจะเลือกทั้งทางเลือกแรก คือการตั้งใจเรียน กับทางเลือกใดทางเลือกหนึ่งจากอีกสองทางเลือกที่เหลือ แต่สิ่งที่ห้ามทำคือ ห้ามพยายามทำทุกอย่าง ยกเว้นว่าถ้ากล้าเสี่ยงที่จะได้ third class degree (เกียรตินิยมอันดับสาม) ผมสนุกสนานกับทุกจังหวะระหว่างที่อยู่มหาวิทยาลัย และนั่นคือประเด็น การเรียนที่มหาวิทยาลัยเป็นครั้งแรก และอาจเป็นครั้งสุดท้าย ที่จะได้มีเวลาว่างที่แท้จริง และได้ลิ้มรสความเป็นอิสระที่แท้จริงครั้งแรกในชีวิต ซึ่งก็มาพร้อมกับผลกระทบที่สำคัญ คุณจะต้องใช้สติพิจารณาให้ดีว่าคุณอยากจะใช้เวลาของคุณอย่างไรในช่วงเวลาสาม สี่ หรืออาจจะถึงห้าปีที่คุณจะอยู่ที่มหาวิทยาลัย เพราะนั่นเป็นช่วงเวลาเดียวในชีวิตหลังจากนี้ที่คุณจะมีความเป็นอิสระอย่างแท้จริง
ตอนที่ผมไปเรียน ผมก็หลงทางไปกับเสรีภาพที่ผมมีไปบ้าง ผมเริ่มสูบบุหรี่เพราะก่อนหน้านั้นสูบไม่ได้ที่โรงเรียน ผมดื่มเหล้ามากเกินไป ผมไปลอนดอนทุกอาทิตย์เพื่อไปปาร์ตี้กับเพื่อน แต่ผมก็รู้ตัวอย่างรวดเร็วว่าผมไม่อยากใช้เวลาว่างที่ผมมีแบบนั้น ผมเลยตัดสินใจว่าผมจะใช้ความเป็นอิสระที่ผมมีในช่วงนี้เพื่อลองทำในสิ่งที่ชอบ และตอบคำถามในใจของผมเอง ซึ่งก็คือกีฬา ผมอยากรู้ว่าผมจะไปได้ไกลแค่ไหนในกีฬาที่ผมเลือก โดยผมเลือกการพายเรือ โชคดีที่ผมเรียนที่ออกซ์ฟอร์ด ผมจึงทำได้ และผมก็ตัดสินใจทุ่มเวลาอีกสองถึงสามปีกับชีวิตที่อยู่ในแม่น้ำ
เพราะฉะนั้น ไม่ว่าคุณจะเลือกทำอะไร ซึ่งตามที่ผมได้พูดไว้ อาจจะเป็นศิลปะ ดนตรี หรืออะไรก็ได้ เลือกอย่างรอบคอบและมีสติ และใช้เวลากับมัน ถึงแม้ว่าจะไม่ประสบความสำเร็จกับมันเท่าไหร่ก็ไม่เป็นไร ผมเองก็ไม่ได้พายเรือเก่งนัก แต่อย่าน้อยที่สุด ก็สามารถใช้เวลาแห่งความเป็นอิสระในค้นพบตัวเอง และทำตามความฝัน ช่วงชีวิตที่จริงจังสามารถเริ่มได้หลังเรียนจบแล้ว ตอนนี้คุณอาจคิดว่าสิ่งที่สำคัญที่สุดคือใบปริญญา ซึ่งก็สำคัญอย่างแน่นอน แต่เส้นทางที่ต้องเดินเพื่อให้ได้ใบปริญญานั้นจะมีผลต่อชีวิตของคุณในอนาคตต่อไปมากกว่า การมีเป้าหมายเป็นสิ่งที่สำคัญ แต่ระลึกไว้เสมอว่า เราควรใช้ชีวิตอยู่กับปัจจุบัน เส้นทางที่เราเดินสำคัญกว่า การใช้ชีวิตอย่างจริงจังสามารถรอได้ ไม่ต้องรีบ
บางคนอาจรู้แล้วว่าตัวเองอยากจะทำงานอะไรหลังเรียนจบ ผมขอรับประกันว่าหลังจากที่เรียนจบแล้ว หลายๆ คนในนี้จะเปลี่ยนใจ อีกหลายๆ คนในนี้ก็คงไม่แน่ใจเลยว่าตัวเองอยากทำอะไร ไม่ต้องรู้สึกแย่ถ้าเป็นเช่นนั้น ผมเชื่อว่ามันเป็นเรื่องปกติ และการเรียนที่มหาวิทยาลัยก็เป็นโอกาสที่จะได้เปิดใจ เพราะฉะนั้นก็เปิดใจเพื่อรับชุดความคิดใหม่ๆ กับโอกาสใหม่ๆ การใช้ชีวิตจริงจังเริ่มทีหลังได้
ก่อนผมลงจากเวที ผมขอทิ้งคำคมสุดท้ายจากหนึ่งในนักกีฬาที่ผมชื่นชอบมากที่สุด คือ นายราฟาเอล นาดาล ผมรู้ว่าทุกคนคงรู้สึกประหม่าเล็กน้อย อาจจะเพราะพิธีในวันนี้ หรือเพราะว่ากำลังรอผลสอบ A-Level อยู่ และก็คงกังวลเรื่องชีวิตต่อไปนี้ที่มหาวิทยาลัย ที่อาจจะเป็นครั้งแรกของหลายคนที่จะจากกับที่บ้าน นาดาลเคยกล่าวว่า "อย่าไปกลัวความประหม่า ความประหม่าเป็นความรู้สึกที่ดี มันทำให้คุณต้องกระปรี้กระเปร่า และมีความเฉียบคม" ผมเชื่อเช่นนั้น ขอให้มีความเฉียบคมเข้าไว้ มีความโชคดี และมีความตั้งใจ ขอให้โชคดีต่อไป และกลับมาช่วยประเทศชาติของเรา ขอบคุณครับ
