My stepdaughter never liked me, and she hadn't spoken to me in months — maybe even a year. Then, out of nowhere, she calls, sounding all upbeat, asking to meet at a fancy restaurant. I thought maybe she was ready to try to rebuild our relationship. That's all I ever wanted, so of course, I said yes.
We meet up, and she's there, looking happy but also a bit nervous. Right away, she's ordering the most expensive things on the menu — lobster, steak, you name it. But what bothered me was that she didn't really want to talk. I'd ask a question, and she'd give short answers, barely looking at me. She kept glancing at her phone and over my shoulder like she was waiting for something.
Then, the bill arrives. Before I could hand over my card to pay, she whispered something to the waiter and then mumbled she had to go to the washroom. She slipped away, leaving me sitting there with a huge check.

"He did leave you an inheritance," I said, watching as their eyes lit up with anticipation. They were already grinning, thinking they had won.

I reached into my bag and pulled out a sealed envelope. "He left you this."

But when they finished, they looked up at me, their anger boiling over.

"How dare you?! Give us the keys!" Jason's father demanded, his voice trembling with fury.

My marriage with Mike was done way before we signed any papers. He’d been more into his flashy image than into us for ages. Big cars, big house—if it screamed “Look at me,” he wanted it. So when he finally told me he wanted a divorce, I wasn’t shocked. What got me, though, was how quick he was to grab everything. “I want the house, the car, the savings,” he said, all smug. He even tossed me the crumbs—my personal stuff, as if that was some generous offer.
I just smiled and nodded. I let him take it all because I knew what was coming. My lawyer looked at me like I was crazy, but I told her to let him have it. We signed those papers, and I moved out that afternoon, eager to start my new life, but not before making one final call. Everything was set.
The next morning, my phone rang, and it was Mike, absolutely livid.

Recently, my two grandkids and I went to the beach to have fun, as usual.
"GRANDMA, LOOK, THAT'S OUR MOM AND DAD!" my grandsons shouted, pointing toward a young couple sitting at a café nearby. My daughter and son-in-law had died two years ago. When I looked at the couple, I nearly fainted, for I immediately recognized my daughter. The man looked different but still bore a striking resemblance to her husband, Anthony.
I took my grandchildren by the hand and handed them over to my friend Ella, who was sunbathing nearby. I asked her to watch them for an hour, and she agreed. "Don't go anywhere; you can sunbathe here," I told my grandchildren.
Then, I immediately went back to our previous spot and started to spy on the couple. Soon, they stood up and left. I followed them to see where they lived, as it didn't feel appropriate to approach them just yet.
Meanwhile, my daughter and son-in-law walked to a small cottage covered in grapevines and disappeared behind the fence. Without a second thought, I called the police. Then, I rang the doorbell. ⬇️
