Radio Al-Furatiya (formerly Sawt al-Raqqa) is an independent community radio station broadcasting into al-Raqqa and Deir al-Zor regions in east Syria. It started broadcasting in Raqqa only in June 2017, as the area was being liberated from ISIS. At the beginning of 2020, after the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zor was liberated from ISIS, the broadcast was extended to include this region too, and the name and identity of the radio was changed to Al-Furatiya, which is derived from the name of the Euphrates river in Arabic. Al-Furatiya broadcasts daily 12 hours of live programmes and news in Arabic, in the local dielacts. Its main mission is to provide reliable and objective news and information on what is happening in the al-Raqqa and Deir al-Zor regions, and on humanitarian assistance and stabilisation efforts provided there. Al-Furatiya also aims to amplify local people's voices and shed light on their everyday needs and problems, with a particular focus on IDP's and post-conflict problems (social, psychological, security and so on). Al-Furatiya strives for a peaceful, democratic society where the rule of law prevails and everyone is free and equal, In the current circumstances in Syria, this means: • defending the freedom of speech and freedom of information; • defending individual and collective human rights and democratic values and exposing human rights abuses by all parties to the Syrian conflict; • helping the different communities inhabiting the region get to know each other and enhance mutual trust between them, and promoting a culture of plurality and tolerance, in the face of rising fundamentalism and extremism; • defending women's rights and strengthening the role of women in the media, and in society more generally; • strengthening the role of the youth in society and shedding light on their problems.
