Media Stakeholders Validate Safety Guide for Journalists in South Sudan

Juba, South Sudan – A one-day validation workshop for a safety guide aimed at journalists in South Sudan is currently underway. The workshop, organized by Advance South Sudan in partnership with the Union of Journalists of South Sudan and funded by UNESCO South Sudan brings together media stakeholders, civil society, and government representatives to review and endorse the guide.

The event was graced by the Director General of Media Compliance from the South Sudan Media Authority, underscoring the government's commitment to supporting a safe and conducive working environment for journalists.

This initiative represents a significant step towards promoting press freedom and the safety of journalists in South Sudan. By providing practical guidance and resources, the safety guide will empower journalists to carry out their crucial work without fear of reprisal, contributing to a more informed and democratic society.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.Yesterday, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence launched a crucial campaign aimed at ending violence against girls and women in South Sudan, under the theme "Together We Can End Violence Against Women and Girls."

The event began with an overview of the significance of the 16 Days of Activism, highlighting the essential roles of women and community leaders in preventing gender-based violence. Discussions emphasized how community leaders can actively protect women and girls against violence.

Funded by USAID and in partnership with IREX and AMWISS, the campaign took place in Lokiliri Payam, Central Equatoria State, Juba.
The efforts focused on raising awareness and promoting the rights of women and girls. Together, we can work towards a safer and more just society for all. Let’s unite to end violence!

The guests included Peter Loruba, the Communication and Volunteer Management Officer,Yohana Micheal, the Blood Donor and Recruitment Officer and Okot Mathew, a lecturer from Catholic University, who shared the positive impact of the training received by university students from the South Sudan Red Cross.

They provided invaluable insights on First Aid, voluntary blood donation, and its contributions to the lives of others, as well as community support.The conversation highlighted the Red Cross's dedication to educating and empowering individuals to respond effectively in emergencies. 𝐉𝐮𝐛𝐚, 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟏𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒--- President Salva Kiir Mayardit has formally penned his assent into six critical pieces of legislation, marking a milestone in the ongoing country's reform agenda.

The six bills assented by the president are:

1• Tourism Act 2024

2• Public Financial Management and Accountability Act 2011 (Amended 2024)

3• National Bureau of Statistics Act

4• Commission for Truth,Reconciliation and Healing Act 2024

5• Civil Aviation Authority Act 2012 (Amendment Act 2024)

6• Compensation and Reparations Authority Act 2024.

Justice Minister Ruben Madol Arol Kachuol, who presented the bills to the President, expressed gratefulness for the smooth passage of the legislation, which followed extensive consultations with various stakeholders before its due passage by the country's top two houses.

The Association of Media in South Sudan (AMWISS) hosted a one-day stakeholder meeting between media and the community in collaboration with SNOKE Gender Justice. The meeting included discussions on reporting previous activities and sharing impactful stories about gender-based violence (GBV), featuring representatives from youth, women, and local councils/chiefs.

The meeting addressed prevention and management strategies for GBV, developed a sustainability plan for the Coalition, and explored collaboration with other groups.
