Until April 12, 1980, Samuel Kanyon Doe was a nobody. He was just a regular neglected officer in the Liberian army. Due to the oppression of the country’s civil servants by President William Tolbert, Doe decided to meet the president to ask him in person why he had not been paid for months.

With 16 other non-commissioned officers, Doe climbed into the presidential compound and entered the executive mansion.
