South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF) names four new players in the roster for Afrobasket 2025 qualifiers later this month.

The four players whose names are yet to be disclosed by the federation will join up with eight members of the team in Senegal.

South Sudan will take on Mozambique, Mali and DRC Congo in the qualifiers from the 22nd to 24th November in the Senegalese Capital Dakar.

According to reports, the team will enter camp on 15th November but is faced with financial challenges.

Despite government’s support in the previous competitions such as the World Cup and Olympic games, finances for the qualifiers is yet to be released.

The team put up a fantastic performance during the debut at the World Cup in 2023 and the 2024 Paris Olympics games.

South Sudan currently ranks first in Africa and 23rd in the world according to FIBA rankings.

The first electric elevator in the world. In 1859, the electric elevator was installed at the 5th Avenue Hotel in New York. Before elevators were known as such, they were known as cranes and the concept behind elevators existed since the 3rd century BC. C. before the idea was updated in 1859. Otis Tufts, the inventor famous for his design of the double-hulled steamboat and pile driver, announced his interest in designing an electric elevator that could safely transport passengers. He called this invention vertical screw or vertical railway. It appears that this name was given because the elevator was powered by a long spiral screw that passed through the elevator and raised and lowered it by the use of a steam engine. The invention gained incredible popularity and two prominent hotels decided to install electric passenger elevators created by Tufts in 1859.

A senior UN official says the ongoing war in Sudan and political instability in South Sudan have stalled discussions on Abyei's final status and border issues.

The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, reported to the UN Security Council that the UN Interim Force, UNISFA, is on standby to support the resumption of the Joint Security Mechanism, which last met in July 2023, and the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee, which last convened in 2017.

ASG Pobee reiterated the call for the withdrawal of South Sudanese troops from the area.

“Another critical challenge is the continued presence of South Sudanese security personnel in Southern Abyei. This deployment violates the 2011 agreement between the Sudan and South Sudan on the administration and security of Abyei," said ASG Pobee, "It has also resulted in repeated restrictions on UNISFA’s freedom of movement in contradiction of the status of forces agreement."

The South Sudan Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Cecilia Adeng, said the deployments are intended as a temporary measure.

“The deployment of South Sudan security personnel has been a temporary measure aimed at safeguarding lives and preventing escalations of inter-communal violence," said Adeng, "Our intent has been de-escalatory and focused on the protection of civilians. We are open to collaborating with UNISFA to explore alternative security arrangement that meets the needs of our communities while protecting the materialization status of the region.”

Nigeria's army chief General Taoreed Lagbaja has died, aged 56, following a "period of illness," President Bola Tinubu has announced. The exact details of his illness were not made public. In a statement shared on X by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed his "heartfelt condolences" to General Lagbaja’s family. Lagbaja served as army chief since June 2023.

The local authorities in Kapoeta South County in Eastern Equatoria State have said at least ten people died after an informal gold mine collapsed last week in Nakiki Village due to torrential rains.

The bodies of five of the miners have been recovered and three other miners are nursing injuries. The bodies of the other five miners remain trapped inside a hole estimated to be between 8 to 9 meters deep, according to a local official.

In March, at least seven gold miners died while another survived after a gold mine collapsed in the Naknak area of Kapoeta South County. Since last year, the death toll of people killed in gold mine collapse incidents has risen to 14.

Kapoeta South County Executive Director Juma Justine told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday that the incident happened last Wednesday at around 5 p.m. and the injured were rushed to Kapoeta Civil Hospital for treatment.

“Our people here are locally mining gold from underground and excavate holes up to 7 or 8 meters and last Wednesday one of the mines collapsed on a group of people,” he said. “Three injured male miners were brought to the hospital and one was in critical condition. Unfortunately, ten miners died and they only managed to recover five dead bodies.”

Doctor John Isaac, Medical Director at Kapoeta Civil Hospital, confirmed that the three injured miners are receiving treatment at the facility and are improving.

“We received them about two days ago, we first received two when I checked but the number has currently gone to three,” he stated. “Their injuries range from minor to moderate but we are managing them and there is no need to refer them for further treatment.”

Meanwhile, Juma Tigol, the coordinator of the Civil Society Network in Greater Kapoeta, urged the government to intervene and mitigate the recurrent accidents.

“Such incidents of mines collapsing have happened several times and many people died,” he said. “The government should devise means for best mining practices and enlighten the commu
