Costello Garang Riiny suspends Hussein Abdelbagi from SSPM amid leadership dispute

Dr. Costello Garang Riiny, Chairman of the South Sudan Patriotic Movement (SSPM), has responded forcefully to claims by Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol and his faction that Garang has been ousted as the party’s leader.

Earlier today, Hussein and a group of alleged SSPM members announced that Garang had been dismissed as Chairman and replaced with Hussein as interim leader. In response, Garang released a strongly worded statement dismissing the claims as illegitimate and labeling Hussein’s actions as the desperate move of a “dying horse.”

In his statement, Garang clarified that the attempt to remove him was unconstitutional, asserting, “Hussein Abdelbagi and his group have invoked a fictitious article, which does not exist in our constitution, to justify their illegitimate attempt to oust the Chairman. This clearly demonstrates that they are a rogue group making baseless claims.”

Garang emphasized that no provision in

The U.S. State Department Tuesday announced that it would be approving the sale of 720 Stinger missiles to Egypt, a nation increasingly becoming a close partner to Washington over the Gaza crisis, despite concerns over human rights abuses.

State Department said it has already informed Congress of the approval. U.S. lawmakers can still block the sale, but such attempts are usually unsuccessful.

The sale will help “improve the security of a friendly country that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic growth in the Middle East,” State Department said in a statement.

The deal is a turn around by the current U.S. government after President Joe Biden took office in 2021 and vowed to be hard on Egypt over human rights concerns under his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. However, Washington has repeatedly gone ahead with arms deals with Cairo, one of the largest recipients of U.S. security aid since its peace treaty with Israel in 1979.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Cairo last week and hailed the partnership with Egypt, which along with Qatar has been working with Washington to broker a cease-fire in the nearly year-old Gaza war.

𝐉𝐮𝐛𝐚, 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 — The Presidency, under the chairmanship of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has announced an extension of the country's transitional period by two years as well as postponing elections, which were initially scheduled for December 2024 to December 22nd, 2026.

Speaking to reporters, Presidential Adviser on National Security, Hon. Tut Gatluak said the extension is an opportunity to implement the critical remaining protocols in R-ARCSS, such as the permanent constitution process, census, and the registration of political parties.

On his part, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro said the extension is in response to the recommendations from both electoral institutions and the security sector. Citing pending critical tasks necessary for the successful conduct of elections, necessitating the delay, saying there is a need for additional time to complete essential tasks before the polls.

Minister Lomuro also reassured the public that the government would remain operational during this extended period.

The Minister further stressed that the government will not be dissolved and will continue to function as usual while the institutions work to finalize their provisions.

The Presidency also emphasizes that the remaining months of the current transitional period will be utilized to mobilize funds, aimed at the effective implementation of the revitalized peace agreement. This initiative, Dr. Lomuro emphasized that it is crucial for achieving long-term peace and stability in the country.
