CONAKRY, Guinea—On January 7, 2025, Guinea experienced unrest as parts of its capital city went into lockdown. Civil society and opposition groups protested against the ruling junta for failing to meet its deadline to initiate a return to democracy. The United States has urged the junta to provide clear timelines for long-delayed elections.
Initial reports indicate that one person was killed and many others were injured during the crackdown. Several individuals were also arrested.
The unrest led to significant disruptions in transportation and commerce, despite a heavy police presence and stern warnings that kept many potential protesters at home.
The Forces Vives de Guinée (FVG), a coalition of opposition parties and civil society groups, is demanding that the junta, which ousted President Alpha Condé in 2021, step down and implement a civilian-led transition.
Over three years have passed since the upheaval, and the return to civilian governance remains uncertain. Last Sunday, protesters clashed with law enforcement in Koloma, where a prominent figure from the Union des Forces Démocratiques de Guinée was taken into custody.

SLAJ Urges Police Chief to Guarantee Safety of Journalist Thomas Dixon Amid Tensions

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IG), Fayia Sellu, to publicly guarantee the safety and security of journalist Thomas Dixon, ensuring he can return to his professional and personal life without fear.

This appeal follows a tense situation sparked by a Facebook post in which Dixon described the IG as "arrogant." According to SLAJ President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, the IG expressed frustration over the post, alleging it misrepresented him despite his prior phone conversation with Dixon.

The IG reportedly mentioned the possibility of Dixon's arrest during their communication.

SLAJ intervened swiftly, with Nasralla urging the IG to pursue alternative actions, such as filing a formal complaint with the Independent Media Commission (IMC) or writing directly to SLAJ. Following this, the IG reportedly reconsidered the arrest but insisted on reminding journalists to maintain professionalism in their work.

To de-escalate the situation, Nasralla also advised Dixon to temporarily leave his residence as a precautionary measure. In parallel, SLAJ engaged the Minister of Information and Civic Education and the IMC Chairman to seek assurances of Dixon’s safety.

Nasralla commended the IG for his willingness to consider SLAJ’s advice but emphasized the need for a public commitment to Dixon’s safety.

“We now call on the IG to publicly guarantee the safety and security of Thomas Dixon, allowing him to return to his normal activities without fear,” Nasralla said.

The Sierra Leone Women’s Football League: A Landmark Event for Women’s Sports

The inauguration of the Sierra Leone Women’s Football League in Kenema City stands as a pivotal chapter in the narrative of women’s sports within the nation. The league’s opening match, which featured a resounding 8-0 victory for Mogbwemo Queens over Malema Queens, not only highlighted the remarkable talent of the players but also signified the potential and vibrancy of women's football in Sierra Leone.

The ceremony surrounding the league's commencement reflected a growing recognition and institutional support for women's football in the country. In a display of gratitude, Madam Cathrine Sillah, Chairperson of the Women’s Board, acknowledged the numerous stakeholders whose concerted efforts ensured the success of this historic event. Angela C. Gabidon, the Board Secretary of the Sierra Leone Women's Premier League Board, assured the nation of a commitment to delivering a league that is both impactful and well-organized, a testament to the increasing emphasis on developing women's sports.

Support from key figures within the Sierra Leone Football Association, such as Ing. Mohamed Benson Bawoh and Haja Ramatulai Kamara, underscores the critical administrative and advocacy roles being filled to promote and facilitate women's football. Their efforts are complemented by the government's backing, as emphasized by Haroun Korji, Director of Sports at the Ministry of Sports, who advocated for sports as a cornerstone of national progress.

The match’s standout player, Kadiatu Musa Kamara, affectionately known as KK, exemplified the skill and determination that will undoubtedly characterize this league. Her exceptional performance, marked by a hat trick and two assists, not only contributed to her team's victory but also set a high bar for future contests.

The successful launch of the Sierra Leone Women’s Football League is more than just a series of matches; it represents a momentum shift in the recognition and empowerment of women in sports. As the season progresses, it holds the potential to inspire future generations of female athletes, enhancing the visibility and viability of women's football in Sierra Leone and beyond. The league is poised to be a catalyst for significant advancements in women's sports, and its impact will resonate far beyond the boundaries of the pitch.
