The incident took place at a food distribution event for the vulnerable held in a local church, police said in a statement Sunday. More than a thousand people turned up to the event, the statement read.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, called the crowd crush a “devastating blow to our community,” and said he was mourning the dead with “profound shock and sadness.”

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu cancelled his appearance at a boat regatta in Lagos after the tragedies on Saturday, his special adviser said in a statement.

“Commiserating with the victims of the unfortunate incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory, President Tinubu urged states and relevant authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures immediately,” Bayo Onanuga said.

“In a season of joy and celebration, we grieve with fellow citizens mourning the painful losses of their loved ones,” Tinubu said, according to the statement.

The Nigerian government has responded to allegations of its alleged involvement in the December 13, 2024, attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline in the Dosso region of Niger. In an official statement issued on Saturday, December 21, 2024, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly denied any involvement of Nigerian security forces or support for the Lakurawa terrorist group in the incident.

Nigeria expressed its condolences to the Niger government over the attack and underscored its continued commitment to the fight against terrorism, reiterating that it would not tolerate or support the activities of such groups. The statement said the perpetrators of the attack received no support from the Nigerian authorities.

Paracetamol, a popular over-the-counter medication known for treating mild-to-moderate fever and pain, has long been regarded as safe and effective. However, emerging research reveals potential health risks, particularly among adults aged 65 and older. Recent studies according to PTI suggest that prolonged use of the drug may increase the likelihood of gastrointestinal, heart, and kidney complications in this demographic.

Paracetamol is commonly prescribed for Osteoarthritis

Paracetamol is frequently recommended as the first-line treatment for osteoarthritis, a chronic condition causing joint pain, stiffness, and swelling due to wear and tear. It is preferred for its perceived safety and accessibility. Despite this, its effectiveness in managing osteoarthritis pain has come under scrutiny.

A 2016 study published in The Lancet analyzed data from 76 randomized trials involving 58,451 knee and hip osteoarthritis patients. Researchers from the University of Bern found that paracetamol failed to provide adequate pain relief or improve physical function in these patients. This raises questions about its role as the primary medication for such conditions.
