Some radio amateurs are very disappointed in our DX-pedition because, in their eyes, we do not pay attention to 50 MHz | 6 Mtr. Other radio amateurs wonder why we do not do 50 MHz | 6 Mtr. Every week we get a lot of questions about this from different countries.

It’s not that we don’t want to, we would even be very glad to be active on 50 MHz | 6 Mtr during the VU4X DX-pedition. But unfortunately, regulations decide otherwise. On Andaman Island, 50 MHz | 6 Mtr is only allowed with a maximum power of 25 watts | FM.

We have been requesting permission for an exception for a very long time. Hoping to get temporary permission to use more power and different modes. There have been several contacts with the Ministry of Communications. Currently, we have not yet received a final decision or positive response. But we keep asking the question and together with you hope for a positive answer.

The weather did not look too good, but Saturday, September 28, had been noted in our agenda for some time as the first VU4X antenna day. At 8 a.m. we met at Patrick ON4HIL's house. Patrick and Betty welcomed us with coffee and delicious coffee cakes. Then it was time for antenna work and we started building the first antennas.

On the agenda were the 160 Mtr - 80 Mtr and 60 Mtr vertical with elevated radials. Everything was neatly measured out and it was nice to experiment and see what influences some things did or did not have on the antennas | radials.

Team members present: ON4HIL Patrick | ON5UR Max | ON5RA Pascal | ON5TN Karel | ON7USB Geert | ON8AZ Francis. In the afternoon Filip ON4FF came to lend a hand.

It was a very productive day, and the first antennas are ready to be packed up further.

Aanwezige teamleden: ON4HIL Patrick | ON5UR Max | ON5RA Pascal | ON5TN Karel | ON7USB Geert | ON8AZ Francis. In de namiddag kwam Filip ON4FF nog een handje toesteken.

Het was een zeer productieve dag, en de eerste antennes zijn klaar om verder ingepakt te worden.

Day8-9: the last flight, going home. Last time also checking in and collecting 34 cases 💪 Talking about luggage handling: we experienced how it should NOT be done: so far , 5 cases lost (SAS ensured they will be sent to Zaventem directly-we'll see...) and 2 damaged ones ; we 've been treated better in the past... Apart from this, it has been a fantastic experience, and we hope you enjoyed your contacts as much as we do! On behalf of the JW0X crew : 73 to all! de on4ec

Day7- JW0X went QRT at 12h z , with 32000+ qso's in the log! Not only the qso count is beyond expectations , the JW100QO operation turned out to be a major success, and we made contact with Antarctica over QO100, setting a new distance record. For us, it was a fantastic journey, in an amazing country. More pictures and stories will be posted soon. Thanks for watching!

Day6 - the JW100QO team went QRT around 12h z, with over 1300 calls in the log! Beyond expectations, and it could have been more, as one station converter gave up on Saturday. We welcomed them back at Longyearbyen by 19h z. More of them tomorrow - they need some sleep now... On the HF bands, pile-ups are still very present - the result is 28000+ contacts in the log 💪 The 30000-marker is within reach... Tomorrow we will start dismantling the stations bij 13h z. Until then: stay tuned!

Day5- today's headline news was the qso over QO100 with Neumayer Arctic base . Already over 1000 qso's in the log - great job, guys! But the 5 other JW0X stations are going strong too: 20000+ contacts in the log now 💪. About the digital ones: the FT8 logs will be uploaded shortly, don't worry, they are not lost😉. We had some strange RX conditions today, the ssb signal was really garbled - aurora caused phenomenon it seems. Sorry to all stations whose call we had to ask repeatedly- your patience has been appreciated.

We had a plan and so many questions, but was our plan achievable? Weeks of research through Google and a lot of email messages were needed to find the right person or company. We communicated with some for weeks and finally got a negative answer. The disappointment was often great and we had to start our search again from scratch.
We kept hoping that someone, somewhere out there was willing to support our project, someone believing in our plan and willing to fully support it.
I got in touch with Stefano Poli who started his own company “Poliartici” in 1999, on Svalbard. He has over 20 years of experience in this region and he made us feel comfortable about our project.
After a few email messages Stefano sent: “My dream is, that your dreams come true and lets go for it together”. It felt good and we noticed quickly that Stefano has a lot of experience and that he was very driven to achieve our goal together.
Stefano emphasized that we had to realize that on Svalbard it's still winter time in April and the weather can be extremely harsh. We have to travel 100 km on a snowmobile in temperatures of about -20° to -25° (wind chill can be even lower). In good weather this trip will take five hours, in bad weather it may take more than 7 hours.
For safety reasons , two guides during the trip are mandatory; and two snowmobiles with sleds for transporting the material, weapons, extra security, etc. At our location we are not allowed to go outside without extra security or surveillance , eg to raise antennas - because we are in a “Wildlife area”.
After six months, we can finally say we have a good plan that is coming together - it's going to happen! We have good agreements, contracts have been signed and the first advance payments have been made.
You will read more details on our website soon.
