Healing bone defects remains one of the biggest challenges in orthopedic surgery — both in clinical and experimental settings. Our new study explores an innovative, sustainable solution: eggshell-derived hydroxyapatite (eHA) combined with autologous bone marrow to promote bone regeneration.

Choosing the right animal model is key to successful experimental oral surgery, especially for testing implants, screws, prostheses, or bone defect repair techniques.

Our newly accepted study provides a comparative morphological and morphometric analysis of the mandible in three commonly used animal models: rabbits, sheep, and goats. Using X-ray and CT imaging, we measured mandibular geometry, cortical thickness, and canal structure to guide model selection in future research.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains one of the most pressing global challenges — and livestock production, particularly poultry, plays a crucial role in its emergence and spread.

Our newly accepted study investigated Escherichia coli isolates from broiler flocks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, examining their resistance profiles and the presence of key resistance genes.

🐱 Today is World Cat Day! 🐱

In Slovenian Veterinary Research, our 2023 issue was dedicated to cats – and among the highlights was our In the Spotlight feature: “Can illustration help us understand our cats better?”

🔍 Recent research has shown that cats have as many as 276 distinct facial expressions, linked to a wide range of emotions – from playfulness and affection to anxiety and aggression. Scientific illustration has proven to be an invaluable tool for capturing these subtle nuances, allowing for more accurate detection than observation alone.

💡 Why does this matter?
Recognizing signs of pain or distress enables more empathetic and effective care. Understanding feline facial expressions strengthens the human–cat bond, improving animal welfare. It raises questions about how selective breeding might shape cats’ communicative abilities in the future.

🐝🥚 Can honey sweeten the reproductive performance of hens?

A fascinating new study—just accepted in Slovenian Veterinary Research—explored whether adding honey to drinking water could boost the reproductive health of naked neck hens, a hardy chicken breed often used in tropical climates.

Researchers gave hens either no honey (control), 5 g/L (Group A), or 10 g/L (Group B) of honey in their drinking water over a 35-day period.

Here’s what they discovered:
🍯 Hens receiving 10 g/L honey laid more eggs, had better fertility and hatchability, and produced larger, heavier, and better-shaped eggs—especially by the third week of treatment.
🥚 While not all parameters showed a significant difference early on, the results suggest that honey supplementation may help support aging hens in maintaining reproductive performance.

This study is a beautiful reminder of how natural products like honey—rich in bioactive compounds—can influence animal health in subtle but meaningful ways.

🚨 Did you know that raw milk can sometimes carry dangerous bacteria—even when it looks and tastes perfectly fine?

In a newly accepted study in our journal, researchers took a closer look at buffalo milk and f***s to check for the presence of Escherichia coli O157, a strain known to produce Shiga toxin, one of the most dangerous foodborne pathogens.

🥛 The team tested samples from healthy-looking animals and found:

Sorbitol-negative E. coli in nearly 30% of f***s and 21% of milk samples

The O157 antigen (part of the dangerous strain) in 9 stool and 3 milk samples

Most importantly, Shiga toxin genes were detected in a surprisingly high number of cases—even though the usual H7 antigen was absent

⚠️ What does this mean?
Even if everything seems fine on the surface, silent contamination with toxin-producing bacteria is possible. This research sends a clear message:
Food safety starts on the farm.

✅ The study calls for:

-Better hygiene practices during milk production
-Continuous training for farm workers

Stronger safety regulations to protect consumers

📚 Another important step in our understanding of zoonotic risks—and how veterinary science helps keep our food and families safe.

🐤 Effect of LED Light Colour and Stocking Density on Some Hematological and Oxidative Stress Parameters in Japanese Quails

This study explores how LED light colour (white, blue, green) and stocking density influence stress and antioxidant responses in Japanese quails—an increasingly relevant topic for animal welfare in commercial production systems.

🔍 Key insights:
White LED light increased the heterophile/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio, indicating higher physiological stress.

High stocking density significantly reduced liver CAT and GSH activity, markers of oxidative defense.

Blue light reduced heart weight, suggesting possible light-dependent metabolic changes.

These findings highlight the need for optimized lighting strategies to improve flock health and welfare.

More research is essential to define best practices for lighting and density in quail farming—and this paper is a valuable step forward.
