Published only in 2022, this is a book that I must collect.

It wasn't business as usual after the Japanese surrendered. A new enemy emerged from the opportunistic former allies of the British, declaring and defending liberated territories, extorting money from businesses and holding kangaroo courts to punish the alleged traitors.

The British returned to Singapore first, restoring law and order. Residents on the island were a little more fortunate. Malaya on the other hand was deep in anarchy. My maternal grandparents didn't really like the British, but they knew well that they were the lesser evil.

The attention spans of the current generation of readers are measured in milliseconds. Should this title be written and presented as a conventional novella of say 30,000 words? "Friday nights at the ER were notorious for "Grandma dumping". Mr and Mrs La Jolla Country Club couple, or whoever, would show up at the ER dressed for an evening out. In tow would be "Mom", who was undoubtedly an elderly family member living with the couple and not capable of being left alone to take care of herself on a Friday night.

"Mom is complaining of pains and some other things, right, Mom?" the husband would say, careful not to let the spilled urine that someone forgot to clean up by the sink touch his sports jacket.

With that, we would start the routine. Mom, being about 400 years old, would have a bag of prescription medications that were directed at the scores of maladies old people have when they get to a certain age and have decent insurance. We would document each and triage Mom, running vital signs and asking questions. The beauty of this for the young, cosmopolitan abandoners was that at her age Mom could reasonably show symptoms of about a half-dozen ailments. We would have to look at each, spend a lot of physician time going over old ground (no pun intended) and ultimately and this is key - keep Mom in the hospital overnight. The couple would then come back the next morning, check one fully babysat Mom out of the hospital, and be on their way."

I find it strange that folks like Jerson are often seen by some Singaporean Sinophiles as traitors who have been manipulated by foreign powers and any social uprising has to be instigated by the West. They simplistically assume that every loyal Chinese person must agree with the authoritarian regime in Beijing.

The biggest irony is that these folks are themselves rebels and mavericks in their own countries. How would they feel if observers insist that they have been manipulated and their actions have been instigated by the West?

A lot of this worrying is actually quite unnecessary. The PAP will definitely form the next government after GE2025. That’s because a good majority of voting Singaporeans are hamsters. They wake up every morning to go run on their wheels. It’s doesn’t matter that they are going nowhere. It doesn’t matter that they will need to run faster and harder even as they age. They are on auto-pilot. They leave all the adjustments, calibrations and directions to the PAP government – the only government they know.
