Mickey Mouse. The Avengers. These are iconic main characters that many of us have grown to know and love. They often have ideal traits or personalities that the audience can resonate with or even aspire to be! Last month we covered the visual elements of a character. Today, we will delve into the conceptualisation of your characters.

Character conceptualisation is the process of creating or constructing a persona through certain traits or descriptions that bring the character to life. While we are familiar with this concept in film and literature, did you know that character conceptualisation is as prevalent in the world of marketing? In fact, character conceptualisation can help boost your marketing strategies in these 2 ways:

1. Buyer Personas
A buyer persona is something that embodies the demographics, psychographics, and behaviours of the ideal customer (backed up by research of course). Character conceptualisation can help your marketing strategies appeal to your buyerā€™s persona. Your customers should find your character relatable and engaging. Letā€™s take a look at the example of Spongebob Squarepants, one of the most well loved characters in childrenā€™s television. Spongebobā€™s childish, happy-go-lucky personality coupled with his comical behavior appeal to the showā€™s target customer - kids. Now imagine if Spongebob was grumpy and hot tempered, the show probably wouldnā€™t be as popular as it is today!

2. Brand Image (sometimes in the form of mascots)
Another way character conceptualisation can contribute to your marketing is by influencing the brand image and personality. This boils down to the way the character thinks, acts, and speaks. Take Mickey Mouse for example; he is the face of Disney! Mickey is depicted as friendly, adventurous and most importantly, kind. These are positive traits that sparked Disneyā€™s legacy as the first animation studio to birth characters with personality, which consequently associates Disney with desirable virtues and character to become a family favourite.

All in all, character conceptualisation can make or break your business. We cannot stress enough how important these characters are in your marketing strategy as they add more depth and personality to your brand, and help you visualise your ideal customers to help you reach your business goals. Start adding character and weight to your brand today with the help of digital marketing through Gramā€™s services!

Ever fallen in love with a character at first sight? Maybe their cute features were just too lovable? Or their bright smile?

When animators create characters, they usually develop and sketch out how the character will look like. This process is known as characterisation - the creation of someone in fictional works through distinct traits. You may think that characterization is only used in films and literature, but did you know that it is an important tool in marketing as well?

Marketing is essentially the promotion of a brandā€™s products and services to the target audience. It is the communication of brand values and identity, and the forming of relationships with audiences. It is thus crucial for your marketing strategies to align your brand message and appeal to your target audience. This is where characterisation can help!

Brand message
Research shows that brand marketing information is only retained by a mere 10% of people. However, including illustrations and characters increases this number to 65%. Hence, your characters should not only be visually engaging, but also play an important role in enhancing your brand message. The but are illustrated in a way that aligns with our brandā€™s products and message.

For instance, if youā€™re working in a sports car company, your brand message will probably focus on conveying the speed and strength of the sports cars. Itā€™ll make more sense to choose strong, powerful animals as your brand character than cute, cuddly ones. You may also want the features of your character to be illustrated in a distinct and fierce manner so your target audience will immediately associate the sports cars with these characteristics.

Disney is a brand that excels at using characterisation and visuals to communicate their brand message and objective, which is to transport audiences into the world of storytelling. Letā€™s take a look at the characterisation of one of Disneyā€™s most classic characters - Bambi, a sweet, lovable fawn that captured the hearts of audiences. Great emphasis is placed on the illustration of Bambiā€™s face, such that his facial expressions are drawn to be extremely realistic and human-like. This essentially allows audiences to form an emotional connection with Bambi, drawing them further into the storytelling of the film.

Target audience
Another way characterisation helps with your marketing strategies is by appealing to your target audience. As marketers, we study our target audience carefully, taking note of their demographics, behavior and interests with the objective of creating marketing strategies that appeal to them. Similarly, your characters should also aim to appeal and resonate with your target audience.

Once again, Disney excels in this and has found a genius way of appealing to their target audience - children. Disney characters are drawn with round features and big doe eyes, making them appear cute and friendly, appealing to the childlike innocence of children. Did you know that Disneyā€™s iconic Mickey Mouse was drawn with childlike features with the intention of triggering attachment between children and the character? This is the same for other Disney characters like Bambi and Marie Cat, their adorable, childlike physical appearance is widely accepted and loved by children all around the world.

Nnow that you have a better understanding of the impact of characterisation, why not create your own? After all, characters are powerful visual tools that can capture your brand message and engage your target audience. Make a difference to your business by adding characters in your marketing strategies today!

Whatā€™s your favourite colour? According to colour theory, your favourite colour can say a lot about you. Isnā€™t it fascinating how a trivial fact about yourself can show so much about yourself?

An article by Cameron Chapman breaks down the psychology behind various colours. For example, orange is a very creative and warm colour, which also suggests that someone who likes orange is likely to be sociable and friendly. On the other end of the spectrum, black signifies power and elegance. This suggests that if your favourite colour is black, youā€™re diligent in your tasks and appear strong in front of others. From these examples, we can see how important colours are due to their symbolic value in colour theory. Letā€™s not leave it as that, we can apply these lessons learnt to our marketing campaigns as well!

Red and yellow[d] ā€“ common colours found in most fast food logos (think McDonalds, Burger King, Wendyā€™s). As you would have guessed, there is actually a reason for this colour scheme! According to experts, red is a bold colour which attracts attention and also stimulates appetite. When red is accompanied with the friendly and happy yellow colour, people tend to associate a pleasant mood to fast food joints, while subconsciously triggered to eat quickly with the loudness of the colours. Based on this example, we can clearly see that colours have a huge role in controlling the mood of the environment. This is an ingenious and inexpensive method to drive up traffic in these fast food places.

One other way that colours play a role in your marketing is the colour palette of your branding guide. Consistency is key in almost every situation, and that applies to your branding strategy as well! This not only helps maintain a standard for your brandā€™s aesthetics, but also helps your customers learn your brand and draw associations to your brand. Take Googleā€™s iconic colour palette for example; green, blue, yellow, red. These colours are a distinctive feature of Googleā€™s brand and we can easily recognise Googleā€™s applications based on the colours alone. According to Google, the choice for these primary colours aims to represent their reach as a reliable and extensive search engine (and brand).

Still not convinced? Surveys show that almost 85% of consumers primarily rely on colours to make a purchase. Now that you know the secrets behind colours, go out there and get creative with your colours to capture your consumers!
