“Traditional markets are considered a sunset industry,” reflected Gan Shing Yen regarding this student project as part of a design studio at Universiti Sains Malaysia. "As architects, we must proactively address this situation.”

Located at the heart of , , , the design comprises the existing Campbell Street Market and a makam (graveyard), classified as heritage buildings.

Through architectural treatments, the site is envisioned to be transformed into physical-digital components: an online market and a traditional market.

In Sri Lanka, Avinya Academy () provides youth with an alternative path towards a career, especially those who are unable to continue in the traditional education system.

The open-air campus, with a capacity of 150 students, features large-span roofs with extended canopies to protect against heavy rainfall. But given the hilly landscape, rainwater naturally flows into the site. How does the design address these site conditions in an alternately wet and dry tropical climate?

Rammed earth is an ancient construction technique that has been gaining niche popularity in recent years.

Principal architect Peeraya Suphasidh () spoke of her inclination to use this building method:

“Rammed earth as the primary building material here is not just an aesthetic choice, but also a practical one—it naturally regulates indoor temperatures, keeping the building cool during hot days.”

Located on the remote seafront town of in , this mixed-use building overlooks the ocean and is subject to a tropical savanna climate.

What comes to mind when you hear the concept of a house without windows?

To the layman, glass windows may be taken as the standard and considered to be a non-negotiable part of buildings. However, most traditional structures all over the world did not use glass.

This rethinking of the role and detail of fenestrations is what Onebulb+Kolam Architecture (.kolam_architecture) have achieved for a small house in , , .

Using a set of passive and active design features, including custom-designed 'aerovents' they were able to cool indoor temperatures with good airflow.

How close to greenery is your working space?

“We turn towards Nature as our guiding force at Jamun Grove,” Amit Aurora and Rahul Bansal, Partners at revealed how they designed their office.

At first glance, the low-rise office building looks like a cluster of cosy cottages. Conceptualised around the existing trees, the blocks have views to the greenery on-site, so that that each team member is never far from the natural surroundings.

What are the societal effects of urban heat island (UHI)?

Speaking to FuturArc contributor Ian Tan (.yh.tan), Associate Professor Sigit Dwiananto Arifwidodo of the Department of Landscape Architecture, Kasetsart University in Bangkok explained how UHI is "not just an environmental issue, but a significant public health concern.”

The impact of UHI on vulnerable groups, including the urban poor, is multifaceted. How can academia play a part in mitigating UHI to help communities become more resilient towards climate change? "You can't tackle UHI with a single approach," Sigit said.

Singapore is one of the world’s most humid countries and has day temperatures that average up to 33 degrees Celsius. This results in a challenging climate, where technological means are needed to achieve thermal comfort and occupant safety in large-scale buildings.

SJ Campus in the Jurong Innovation District is a case study in Super Low Energy (SLE) building that implemented a slew of cooling strategies, combining landscaping features alongside passive and active design elements.

How can co-created placemaking enhance climate resilience and well-being?

The -based Neighbourhood Innovation Lab (.i.lab), founded by architect Eric Ho () trained young adults who are familiar with in design thinking.

Conducting interviews with residents, they discovered that floods during increasingly heavy rains are a significant concern. The design workshops with stakeholders include sketching ideas and making cardboard models to visualise the ideal public space at the river.

How can we enhance ‘primitive’ building materials to resolve modern built environment issues?

This research project by Studio SKLIM () uses materials such as terracotta and plant fibre composites to foster climate-appropriate sustainable materials.

They also explored biodiversity habitats, or Bio-Tats, with a bird house constructed out of kenaf fibre biocomposite and 3D-printed ceramic wall panels.
