Did you know that mines can reach hundreds of metres deep into the Earth?

Mineral-rich earth such as those of Province in has been heavily mined, with quarries appearing like black holes on satellite images.

Did you know that natural organic reduction (NOR) can be an alternative to traditional burial?

To overcome the space limitation of cemeteries and the air pollution caused by cremation, the entry Circulation of Life proposes to use a novel composting technology to enable โ€˜tree burialโ€™ in , .

This FuturArc Prize 2024 Merit proposal by Nguyen Thanh Tan, Ho Nghiem Thuy Quynh, Le Xuan Vinh Khang and Pham Nguyen Hung also aims to shift perspectives on burial to create green spaces and enhancing the quality of life for the community.

Do you know that freshwater only makes up 3% of Earth's water supply, and is an increasingly threatened resource?

In 's Estuary, decades of anthropogenic landscape alterations have led to intensive salinisation and a freshwater crisis.

This not only affects humans who have to import potable water from other cities, but also animalsโ€”endemic primates like the Javan langur have been venturing into residential areas in search of freshwater.

This entry by FuturArc Prize 2024 Third Place winner team Kamil Muhammad, Raushan Fikri, Gerald Alexander Djuneidy and Novita Anggraini is a scalable intervention aimed to distill freshwater while harvesting salt at the same time.

Do you know what measures are currently implemented in North Jakarta to mitigate land subsidence?

Due to massive groundwater extraction, Jakarta's coastal area is sinking at an alarming rate of up to 15 centimetres/year.

Instead of โ€˜hardโ€™ measures that provide minimum advantages to both humans and Nature, this entry by FuturArc Prize 2024 Second Place winner Lyvia Simano proposes landscape modifications and 'appropriable' infrastructures.

How sophisticated are the waste processing facilities in your neighbourhood or district?

For the Rawa Kucing landfill in , , the majority of trash is still being openly dumped, becoming a high-risk fire hazard during the dry season. In 2023, the facility was ablaze for nearly two weeks on end, the longest occurrence thus far.

On this site, the entry by FuturArc Prize (FAP) 2024 First Place winner Arkansyah Farras Setiawan seeks to present a holistic โ€˜cradle-to-cradleโ€™ approach to change users' behaviours relating to trash.

Through architectural gamification and interventions, this proposal envisions different aspects and scales for the implementation of waste processing facilities.

How can design allow commercial functions to be more sustainable while also โ€˜negotiatingโ€™ the publicโ€™s access and usability?

Such questions drove the creation of this small-scale building, located on the CPI commercial cluster in , with a limited usage of 10 years.

The brief prompted .architects to delve into the relationship between commercial and public spaces as well as responding to the lakeside landscape.

"The way Lixi Road twists and turns creates pockets of street space that are both memorable and commonplace. "

This road in an old Shanghai neighbourhood is notable in the sense of its proportionsโ€”it is about 730 metres long, but only 4 or 5 metres wide.

For their design of Over Bakery, sought to reflect the street's ambience and fit into a living environment where time โ€˜gentlyโ€™ flows.

Improving neighbourhoods are often a bottom-up process
of public engagement. What role can artists and other creatives play?

Spark Cityโ€™s collaboration with Art in Place (), on the commercial hub located near the Mong Kok MTR station 6, is a community initiative spearheaded by Urban Land Instituteโ€™s Hong Kong chapter.

The initiative connects artists and real estate developers to contribute creative placemaking. For its inaugural project, hoardings by artist Joanne Chan were created together with the public.

How do you emphasise a โ€˜space within a spaceโ€™?

One example can be found in ZIIN Beijing Store by atelier tao+c (). The project site is part of Langyuan Station, which features a warehouse with pitched roof and brick walls built in the 1960s.

Here, two intersected square frameworks were erected, meticulously rotated at 45 degrees. This forms a 'separate' structure that remains connected to the original brick wall.

Is it better to clear land for new developments or add to whatโ€™s already there?

In support of the latter, the infill approach โ€˜injectsโ€™ new structures on vacant or underutilised plots. This can enhance the existing urban fabric by breathing new life into neighbourhoods and creating new magnets of activity.

For example, Nguyen Van Bรฌnh Book Street and Portable Canopy by TA Landscape Architecture () redefined a parking lot between high rises to become a vibrant walkable destination amidst heritage buildings.

Initially a rubbish dump behind a school bathroom, this space was meticulously cleaned up and equipped with a bamboo play structure for children.

Both ends of the ribbon-like structure designed by Blue Temple () welcome the schoolchildren to play. One end starts as a bamboo mat floor under a tree, the other as a tilted pergola.

For this decade-old house in Manila, taking the form of a family compound, the residents often gather and host dinners for the family and guests.

To create a welcoming extension, Edwin Uy Design Office () designed a lanai (sheltered terrace) that expands the dining area towards the garden.

Although it is modest in size, the lanaiโ€™s visual openness managed to create ripple effects within the compound. What are they?

How can we make good use of the space between towers?

83 KING LAM STREET is one example of an atypical mixed-use development that breaks the mould of a tower-and-podium building typology.

The site comprises a pair of towers set at a distance apart. A generous and well-ventilated public space is nestled protectively in between.

This podium landscape, designed by COLLECTIVE Studio Limited (), include stepped terraces that are suffused with greenery. The steps form an indoor auditorium and at the same time 'frames' its surrounding scenery.

Are you a fan of big gardens surrounding living spaces?

For this house in Quang Yen by .pasierbinski + ra.atelier, the residence takes up less than a third of the 735-square-metre land.

The land originally belonged to the familyโ€™s elders with a flower garden in front, built by the grandfather, and a vegetable garden at the back, built by the grandmother.
