We'll eat one meal a day for Rohingyas, if necessary: Bangladesh Premiere

Highlighting her government's steps to provide shelter, food, and medicare for distressed Rohingya people, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the countrymen will eat one meal a day and share another meal with them, if necessary.

"If necessary, we'll eat one meal a day and share another meal with these distressed people. After all, we are human beings and we stand for the mankind, " she said while exchanging views with her party leaders from different states of the United States at Ritz Carlton Hotel on Sunday evening.

"Even though we're not that rich, we have the heart ... they are human beings, and we can't throw out them into the Bay of Bengal," the premier said.

"Without waiting for any external assistance, we've made arrangements for accommodation, food, and medicine," she said, adding that she had already given Tk five crore as initial funding in this regard.

Sheikh Hasina said the international community was amazed to see the generosity of accepting such huge number of people by the Bangladesh government.

A leading daily newspaper of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today highly appreciated Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her humane approach on the Rohingya issue, dubbing her as the "new star of the East".

"The Bangladesh Prime Minister is the new star of the East ... expressions has no better hero than her this week - for her compassion and empathy in opening the border to save thousands of fleeing Rohingya," noted journalist Allan Jacob wrote in an article in the Khaleej Times, the longest running English language newspaper published in the UAE.
