Friendship Through Fitness: The Stories of Boon Lay Neighbours Ah Lee and Annie

Meet Ah Lee and Annie, two spirited seniors who met through various exercise activities in the Boon Lay community. After several encounters, they discovered they were neighbors, and over the past two years, their friendship has blossomed. Annie is a fitness enthusiast, regularly participating in Zumba and other exercises, while Ah Lee, though not naturally inclined to exercise, finds herself drawn to these activities whenever she attends community events.

Annie enjoys healthy eating, influenced by the Kampung Senang diet, and finds joy in meals at Samoy Theatre Kopitiam for their healthier options. Annie , who works as a Yakult lady, became more motivated to exercise after a fall at work that injured her knees and wrist. She appreciates how Zumba challenges her memory, helping to keep her mind sharp while also improving her physical health. Their stories highlight the strong bonds and support that define the Boon Lay senior community.

Meet the Vice-Chair of Boon Lay Market’s Hawker Association

In the bustling heart of Boon Lay Market, Huat Mei Xiang, as she’s fondly known, has been quietly shaping the community for decades. As the vice-chairwoman of the Hawker Association, she has dedicated her time and effort not just to her own businesses but also to the well-being of fellow hawkers. With two stalls under her care, alongside her children’s stores, she manages more than just daily operations—she helps run the market itself.

Her journey with the hawker association began years ago, when she was first required to join as a stall owner. Soon after, she was asked to take on the role of vice-chairperson, a position she has held for decades. From the beginning, she has seamlessly stepped into the role of being the go-to person for many of the market’s pressing needs. “I’m always happy to help others,” she adds, her passion for the community shining through.

From dealing with broken fans to addressing hygiene concerns, she takes it all in stride. When the streetlights were blocked by trees, it was she who ensured the issue was fixed. “Many hawker owners come to me for help,” she says with a laugh. And when the CDC vouchers were first introduced, she played a key role in helping hawkers exchange them for cash. Though it was a heavy responsibility at first, the introduction of electronic vouchers has lightened the load for her and the rest of the hawkers.

Her presence at the market is hard to miss. With friends always gathered around her stall, the tables in front are often filled with laughter and conversation. Regulars drop by for meals, sharing stories and spending time together. “Everyone knows one another here,” she shares, smiling as she prepares a meal.

It’s this deep sense of community that drives her, whether it’s looking after the hawkers or cooking for friends. She remains a vital part of Boon Lay Market’s beating heart. If you’d like to support her or say hi, we’ve included some photos of her stall below. Please feel free to drop by Boon Lay Market and show her your support!

**Meet Celvin: A Leader Who Balances Community Service with His Role as a Bus Captain**

At RN Zone A, we caught up with Celvin and his wife, Irene, while they were selling tickets for an upcoming carnival. Amid their busy day, Celvin took a moment to share his journey of balancing two roles as a bus captain and Residents' Network (RN) chairman.

Celvin has been serving as RN chairman for over eight years, working tirelessly to support his community. When he first moved into Boon Lay 13 years ago, Celvin’s involvement with the RN began by chance, but it has since blossomed into a deep commitment to helping residents, especially seniors. His experience driving buses aligns well with his RN work, as he often starts his mornings behind the wheel and spends his evenings attending community meetings or organizing events.

During our visit, Celvin proudly showed us photos of the newly opened garden, where he had spent hours with the community, helping with the landscaping. This hands-on approach reflects his dedication—whether it’s leading large-scale events or quietly assisting residents, Celvin is always ready to serve. He believes in giving his best, not for recognition, but to truly make a difference in the lives of those he serves.

Despite the long hours of bus driving, Celvin stays focused on his health and wellbeing. His time working in a physically demanding job has given him a strong work ethic and resilience, which he carries into both his professional and volunteer roles. Celvin often shares his experiences with other bus captains, encouraging them to stay active and engaged, even after long shifts.

Through his work in the RN, Celvin has encountered all kinds of challenges, from helping with hoarding issues to resolving disputes between neighbors. Yet, he remains humble, focused on his goal of ensuring every resident feels supported. For Celvin, it's not about titles or accolades—it's about the everyday connections and being there for the community.

If you ever attend a Boon Lay event, you’ll likely see the booths and activities that Celvin works on tirelessly behind the scenes. His commitment to his residents, especially seniors, is unwavering, and it’s clear that for him, service is a way of life.

If you would like to support him, please look out for more events that are happening through RN Zone A!

Meet Madam Zheng, a beloved figure in the Boon Lay community. She is affectionately known as “大姐” or older sister in Chinese. She had arrived in Singapore from China in 1996 with her husband and two sons. After settling into her new life, she worked tirelessly before retiring to care for her grandchildren. But retirement didn’t slow her down— Every Saturday, Madam Zheng, accompanied by her husband, can be found at Block 190, where she volunteers her time to distribute donations such as bread and other food items to seniors in need.

Madam Zheng's passion for giving back is deeply rooted in her gratitude for the opportunities her family has received in Singapore. Known by many in the area, she carries a notebook filled with the contact details of seniors she personally reaches out to, ensuring they never miss out on community gatherings. When she's not volunteering, she enjoys crafting bags and blankets, a hobby that brings her peace and joy.

Her story is a testament to the power of community spirit and the difference one person can make. We’re lucky to have her as a part of our Boon Lay family!

On a bright, sunny Thursday morning, you could catch a glimpse of a large group of seniors dancing at a coffee shop. Passersby would turn their heads, curious about the lively action they were missing. Empower Ageing organized a delightful "Sing and Stretch" event at the Kopitiam Food Shop, located at 90 Boon Lay Place, Savoy Theatre, alongside the Boon Lay Community Club. The event saw over 60 seniors, aged 55 and above, coming together for a morning of music, movement, and merriment.

Empower Ageing is a local charity with a mission to “Make Ageing Well Possible”. They created the Kopitiam Pop Up initiative because they believe many seniors don’t visit community centers or places "made for seniors," and hence, the team brings their activities to where the seniors are — kopitiams, our “centers without walls”.

The "Sing and Stretch" event ran from 10 am to 11:30 am and was designed to be easily accessible for seniors, with a first-come, first-served registration system. Irene, the enthusiastic volunteer instructor, led the seniors through a series of engaging stretches and joyful songs. Her warmth and energy were infectious, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and fun. The seniors actively participated, following Irene’s lead, singing along to familiar tunes, and stretching their bodies in gentle, rhythmic movements.

The kopitiam was buzzed with laughter, music, and lively interactions among the participants. The setting provided a nostalgic and comfortable environment, reminiscent of traditional coffee shops that hold a special place in the hearts of many Singaporeans.

Empower Ageing’s initiative to host this event in Boon Lay is part of their broader mission to enhance the quality of life for seniors through meaningful engagement and activities. By participating in Empower Ageing’s events, senior residents foster a sense of community and support.

We’re excited to share that Empower Ageing will be hosting more events like this and we warmly invite you all to join in the fun! Stay tuned for updates on their future activities and find out how you can get involved in bringing joy and vitality to our senior community.

Irene’s Heartwarming Volunteer Journey

We met Irene at Empower Ageing’s recent event, where she was volunteering as an instructor, leading seniors through simple stretches and dance moves. After the event, we caught up with Irene to hear her story and learned that she is part of a larger volunteer group called 快乐 ("Happiness" in Chinese). This group started as a choir at a Meditation Centre and has since explored different avenues for volunteering.

We saw Irene in action again at Fu Hui Link nursing home, where they performed for the Sunshine Ward, which serves female residents with dementia. The 快乐 volunteer group sang both Chinese and English songs and danced enthusiastically, engaging the seniors in dancing and conversations. After each performance, they distributed snacks, this time seedless prunes, as a token of their affection. Their bright orange outfits reminded the seniors of festive New Year colors, adding to the joy. During one of the songs, with lyrics "谢谢你 感谢有你世界更美丽我要谢谢你 因为有你爱常在心底" ("Thank you, because of you the world is more beautiful. I want to thank you, because of you love stays in my heart"), both the elderly and the volunteers expressed mutual appreciation, creating a beautiful moment.

Irene recalled a practice session for Sunday’s performance that brought her to tears of joy as her group members laughed intensively. She shared that volunteering with the group has brought her much joy, not only from interacting with different groups of people but also from the camaraderie and laughter shared with other volunteers. Many practice sessions end in joyful tears as the group laughs together.

Despite their age, the volunteers put in their best effort to perform and have fun. Even though it was tiring and the weather was hot, they remained extremely engaging and cheerful. After the performance, while resting and sweating, they continued to interact warmly with the seniors waiting for them outside. The warmth they created fueled their passion and enthusiasm. All the members are extremely humble and friendly to everyone they meet. They plan to share their experiences on Facebook and TikTok soon, hoping to spread more joy and awareness about their work.

Irene hopes to continue sharing these joys with more seniors and demonstrating how movement can create environments of laughter and community. If you are interested in inviting the group to your space or know any communities who would love to meet them, please reach out to us!
