Finally managed to take some time off for a leisure trip to Tokyo! It's been a while since my last vacation and it was such a refreshing experience to be able to unwind and explore the beautiful city. There is so much more that I have yet to see. I can't wait to visit again and explore more of what Japan has to offer!

2022 has been a year of recalibration and prioritisation.

I am thankful for the last couple of years, as I have had opportunities to travel and live in Korea and Taiwan! I spent most of my time in my career and had outstanding achievements and sponsorships from mentors. However, work has also taken away time from my family and friends. And at some point in time, with some incidents, I knew I had my priorities set wrongly.

In 2022, I purposefully try to recalibrate and prioritise my time with my family! I significantly reduce my time posting on social media, going to speaking engagements, attending professional networking events etc. and being home almost daily to eat dinner with family! I also supported my family and friends in their businesses/careers. Good that my wife now has an online business, and I'm waiting for her to employ me in future!

As 2022 is coming to a close, I want to thank all my friends and colleagues! Thank you for being so understanding at times when I stood up on you because I had to bring my kid to see a doctor or to spend dinner time with my family after an extended overseas trip. Thank you to those who sowed into my life and made me a better person!
I look forward to a greater 2023!

I wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Happy 56th Birthday Singapore! It feels good to be back in Singapore after roaming a few years in Korea and Taiwan.

The few years overseas has taught me to appreciate singapore even more. The multi-cultural and multi-national society has played a part in preparing me and my family to embrace new culture overseas. One area that took me some time to adapt is food - we are too spoilt for choices in Singapore!

The world had one of the worst recessions in decades due to the pandemic and Singapore is not spared either. Many businesses were close down in the past year and many were struggling to survive. I also hope that I can do something in my ability to help in one way or another - let me know if you’ve any ideas 💡

There is this lyrics in our 2021 National Day song entitled The Road Ahead - Come whatever, on the road ahead, we did it before and we will do it again!

I am believing with you Singapore that we did it before, and we will do it again!

Happy National Day, happy birthday Singapore!

The spectre of state intervention into controlling the private sector has sparked a crescendo of panic selling.

I’m not an expert in investment nor in political science or economics. Certain regulations such as setting the minimum income for delivery workers, making tutoring on school curriculum to be free of charge etc might seem beneficial for lower income familiars but it is definitely not that straightforward. This move would 1) affect foreign investment into China due to highly uncertain policy risk 2) diminish the value and innovation in education sector when there is limited business opportunities.

I’m sure China has weigh their options carefully but I’m wondering how are they going to respond and manage the consequences that comes with it.

The past decade of market boom and growth has made Gen X disproportionally wealthier. Also probably Gen X had the resources and was in an age group that can be more aggressive in their investment portfolio.

The way people explore and evaluate their options has changed. In the past consumer rely on search engine to compare prices, now they use it to compare more abstract qualities.

For example, take a look at the terms cheap and best. While cheap could be subjective, it has singular meaning. Best, could mean to a variety of metrics such as quality, price or popularity.

Spent a few weeks on this new book “Why generalist triumph in a specialised world”. It is indeed thought provoking.

Malcolm Gladwell proposed the 10,000-hour rule in his book Outliers and the benchmark for future success has become an investment of 20 hours of deliberate practice every week for 10 years.

But David Epstein in this book “Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World” presents another case that in an increasing complex world, a generalist is more valuable in creating innovative solutions to unprecedented problems.

Also recommend this book to parents! In this book the author also shares how parents who encourage their children to try a myriad of different interests are more likely to succeed, versus the “Tiger parent” method of specializing early.

Really love this book, Think Again - The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know by Adam Grant

Intelligence is generally thought of as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world there are other cognitive skills that may be more important: the ability to rethink and unlearn.

Achieving academic excellence in school often requires mastering old ways of thinking. But innovation demands new ways of thinking. Those who do well academically often run the risk of rethinking the orthodoxy.

Very often, I was asked to help various stakeholders to use data to validate or inform something, which is great to use data as decision support. It would even be better if in the process, we allow people to rethink their options.

Data science present a reasonable doubt, not absolute truth.

When you’re tired, rest!

It has been a really fruitful 1.5months of time back in Singapore - Got to meet and spend quality time with my family and friends! Eat what I craved when I was in a foreign land! in ways that I didn’t know.

It is important to rest! Take that day off or holiday if you need.

Apple rely on a unique functional structure to spur innovation. It is not a company where general managers oversee managers; rather, it is a company where experts lead experts. The assumption is that it’s easier to train an expert to manage well than to train a manager to be an expert

Apple emphasise 3 leadership characteristics to spur innovation: Their leaders need 1) deep expertise, 2) immersion in details, and 3) collaborative debate

Interesting read!

December is the time when most people would pause, reflect and make plans for the brand new year.

2020 has been a very challenging year for most people around the globe. We have to cope with many changes and disruptions with . I also see this as a year that will bring forth many opportunities in 2021! Do not be discouraged and we should also not let the challenges we had this year go in vain. We should take some time off to reflect on the series of events that happened this year and what changes should we make in 2021 to make us inch closer to our goals!

Here are some of the questions I asked and this can help to set the baseline moving into 2021. Still have a few more days to conclude 2020. Let’s close our 2020 well and start our 2021 strong!

“You’re looking for three things, generally, in a person,” says Buffett. “Intelligence, energy, and integrity. And the most important of them all is integrity!

People decide whether or not to be generous, they decide whether or not to take credit for things they didn’t do, whether or not to keep score in life, whether or not to be envious.

“You decide to be dishonest, stingy, uncharitable, egotistical, all the things people don’t like in other people,” argues Warren. “They are all choices. Some people think there’s a limited little pot of admiration to go around, and anything the other guy takes out of the pot, there’s less left for you. But it’s just the opposite.”

Probably a very familiar quote that we know from the bible and this serve as a reminder for us that while we are “fighting” out there in the marketplace, we don’t conform our thinking to what the world think or seek!

Warren Buffett says, when he look for people, he always look for intellect, energy and integrity. And the most important of all, says Buffett is integrity. Don’t lose it!

We often hear from successful people that you need to stay focus on doing 1-2 things and be consistent. We also hear from people that you should try many things and see which one works.

Both can be correct and can be wrong. It all depends on the context you’re in. You need to go deep and consistent when you want to outstrip your competitor in that one or two areas. But when it comes to innovating new products and services, you would need the latter!

It is all about context! What do you think?

Should someone start a business based on what the market want? Or based on their passion?

I personally think that you need both, in order to be successful! You can’t be doing something that you are not passionate about! This is simply not sustainable! And you can’t be working on a passion that has no commercial needs or viable business model.

In this episode, I am taking questions from the audience! If you’ve any questions with regards to starting a business or navigating the political culture in workplace, feel free to write to me or comment below!

When it comes to study, I was ranked top 3 in primary school, starting from the bottom!

Many of my friends got straight As for their final exam, and I went back home happily telling my mom that, my grades are interesting. I got ABC, a variety and not just a mundane A only in their certificate.

As a result, they went to top middle school and me, a mediocre school. But our past performances or bad results in school don’t really mean that you are not good at studying. And now, I would say that I’m very satisfied with my results and even went on to get a PhD!

We all love progress and the days where we move from glory to glory! I believe you all can identify with some of the scenarios here:

1. The day you get promoted and have more responsibilities and people to manage
2. The day where you have a breakthrough in your business and profit hits millions
3. The day where you expand your business across the world!

I love to be in those scenarios too! And I love to keep on progressing, moving to greater heights!. But we also know that life is not a linear upward progression. Sometimes, we need to take one step down in order to move two step up.

In career, I have experienced taking one step downwards, by giving up on a role with big teams to move into a foreign country as individual contributor. It is scary because not only you’re taking a step down, you also venture into deep unknowns and many things to think about!

In business, I have also scaled down operations, stay in the game longer than others, before the team takes over more market share!

Even in my high school, I did extremely well in my middle school but I got to quit school for a year due to some family issues. When I get back to high school, all my peers become my senior, and this is unbearable, especially I was the top student in middle school.

And it is also through all these experiences, I know that sometimes you got to take a step back in order for you to scale greater heights! If you can’t take a temporary setback, then what makes you think you can sustain that “higher position” that you’re aiming for? Sometimes, it is wise to take a step down and be patient
