The 2022 Singapore International Festival of Arts marked the first major festival in Singapore since the relaxation of Covid-19 safety measures. I was commissioned by Arts House Limited to create soundscapes for 6 of the venues as they came back to life, and this episode features Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, Singapore's premier performance venue. There's a gorgeous concert hall and a world-class theatre, where I was given access as the crews set-up. You'll also hear the audience arriving, with the reminders about wearing masks, rules which has also been relaxed.

The Arts House at The Old Parliament was one of the venues for Singapore International Festival of Arts 2022, the first festival since the relaxation of Covid-19 safety measures. I visited as the crews were setting up in this iconic landmark and again on opening night for a show that moved to several locations within the building.

22km from the city centre, on a quiet hill, lie the remains for over 4,400 who died in the line of duty during World War II. The Singapore Memorial bears the names of 24,346 soldiers and airmen killed in SE Asia, who have no known grave. The Kranji War Memorial reminds us that modern and prosperous Singapore owes a debt to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I visited several places in Singapore to record the same place using 3 different spatial techniques - mono, stereo and binaural. Use headphones for this episode, cos the binaural effect only works with headphones. The set-ups were a X-Y config for a Sony PCM-D10 (that gave mono-compatible X-Y stereo that I could get a mono sound as well as a X-Y stereo) and a 3Dio FreeSpace Pro II for exceptional binaural with its DPA 4060 omni capsules. The only thing I did was roll off the low end rumble (100Hz and below) and match the levels

Ella Spira is a Grammy-nominated British composer, artist and co-founder of production company Sisters Grimm. A truly multi-disciplinary artist, she held her immersive exhibition, Global Landscape Singapore, this month in Singapore. The exhibition celebrates the richness of life in and around the island through six individual paintings and a series of charcoals.

The paintings are accompanied by photographs taken by Singaporean photographer Rebecca Toh and an evocative score composed by Spira. This score features Singaporean cellist Olivia Chuang and incorporates the sound of Rebecca’s Leica M10 camera click as well as the sound of Singapore thunder storms.

Singapore ranks 3rd in a survey of sleep deprivation across 43 major cities: only Tokyo and Seoul are worse. Less than 5 hours of sleep a night can cause havoc, so this episode presents a summary of 3 types of noise (white, brown and pink) that could be used to help improve quality of sleep. 3 bonus episodes included offer 30 minutes of each type of noise with a gentle 5 minute taper at the end.

It's the bird that everyone hates, because of its annoying call: the Asian Koel starts calling for a mate from as early as 5am, and it's wail has been described as u-wu / oo-oh / ooh-whoo: whichever way you spell it, Singaporeans aren't fans, and some 600 call NParks to complain every year. When I lowered a hydrophonic microphone into a 40 litre office aquarium tank to listen to what the fishes are hearing, I was expecting the kind of soundscape that I'd heard on films like The Abyss and Sphere. What I heard was *nothing* like what I expected. What might also surprise you, is the special relationship that ornamental fish, like goldfish, koi and guppies, have with Singapore.
