WEBINAR: Explore the Colonial History of West Malaysia and Singapore through Rare Documents

Wednesday, 9 October 2024
3pm - 3:45pm (Singapore Time)

https://tinyurl.com/56dzbktx

While the colonial history of the Malayan peninsula can be traced back to the 16th century, it was the arrival of the British in the 19th century that started the process whereby the entire peninsula, including the island of Singapore, was eventually placed under Western influence. The development of tin and rubber, the influx of workers from abroad, and the transformation of traditional Malay rule are only a few examples of the changes brought on by the British colonial powers, the effects of which are still being felt in the region today.

In this webinar, Senior Product Manager Masaki Morisawa will introduce the newly released State Papers Online Colonial: Asia, Part III: Malay States, Malaya, and Straits Settlements, which contains thousands of British Colonial Office documents on present-day West Malaysia and Singapore. Within these documents, researchers can trace the history, politics, and culture of British Malaya, including power struggles, development of industries, the Japanese invasion, ethnic tensions and the Malayan Emergency, and the path toward independence.

American Historical Periodicals from the American Antiquarian Society, Part VIII

Released June 2024 - Now Available!

American Historical Periodicals from the American Antiquarian Society provides a history of the American people from the colonial period to the twentieth century. Offering multiple perspectives on North America's thought, culture, and society through the eyes of those who lived it, the collection shows how history affected citizens from all walks of life.

With 260 periodicals from 1810 to 1926, Part VIII adds 148 titles new to American Historical Periodicals, and 112 that fill gaps in previously digitised periodicals available in Parts I through VII. The titles cover multiple disciplines, including agriculture, arts and literature, business and commerce, children and young people, entertainment and society, ethnic communities, health and medicine, history, immigration, refugee movements, and religion. Many of these periodicals are from state or ethnic historical societies, providing a more localised perspective on American history. This diversity of materials provides multiple lenses through which to view the American experience—and how Americans of that time viewed the world.

The Story:
Donna Martin is a teacher-librarian at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, California. At the beginning of every school year, she introduces freshmen students to her school’s research databases with an assignment called “Comparing Information Sources: Databases vs. Google.” Donna assigns her students a topic they must explore on both the Google and Gale In Context: High School platforms. A worksheet she created guides students and helps them analyze and evaluate each platform based on criteria such as the variety of sources available, whether the information is easy to understand, if the platform is user-friendly, and the overall quality and reliability of results. Donna’s goal with this assignment isn’t to discourage students from using Google entirely. Her goal is to help students develop a better understanding of where they’re getting their information and use the right sources in different situations to develop their research skills. The end-goal is to ensure students know the library and database resources exist and that these sources become their go-to for school assignments.

While Google is an excellent resource for quickly finding information, when it comes to academic research, a limitless search e...
