This extraordinary opportunity, usually restricted to most, marked a groundbreaking moment, opening doors to future partnerships between the airport and local aviation photographers. [A local tale of enthusiasm for aviation at Osaka Itami Airport]

As the winds began to howl and the ambient light slowly dimmed, ominous storm clouds crept in from Osaka Bay, casting a shadow over the airport. Despite the impending storm, a group of local weekend visitors gathered at the runway’s threshold, their anticipation palpable. Curious about the cause of their excitement, I remembered a lesson from my time as a Sinkie: always follow the crowd.

I joined them, eager to discover what lay ahead. It wasn’t long before I understood their enthusiasm. The sheer magnetism of aviation was on full display as a massive Japan Airlines Airbus 350 emerged from the clouds. It gracefully glided over our heads, its landing gear gently kissing the tarmac of Osaka’s Itami Airport. The scene was nothing short of mesmerizing, a testament to the Japanese passion for aviation.

[Chasing the Koru]

Amidst the broad daylight, many Singaporeans rise to the bright, sunny sun and the melodic chirps of birds. As people stretch and prepare for the day ahead, Changi Airport is already a hive of activity, bustling even before dawn. Planes depart and arrive every minute, weaving a constant tapestry of motion.
On this particular morning, I was fortunate enough to wake before the sun’s rays could reach me, before the bird songs stirred me from sleep. I had one goal in mind: to catch a glimpse of the sleek Air New Zealand 787, adorned with its iconic feathered tail design known as the “koru,” a symbol of new life, renewal, and hope for the future.
As I made my way to the viewing spot, the 787 prepared for its departure. The aircraft lined up perfectly with the trees planted along the edge of Changi’s runway, presenting an irresistible photo opportunity. Time was of the essence. I quickly grabbed my camera from my bag, my heart racing with anticipation.
With a sense of urgency, I aimed and snapped just as the plane began its roll down the runway. The roar of the engines was exhilarating, a powerful symphony that echoed through the morning air. Capturing the harmony of nature and aviation in a single frame was a moment of pure joy. Nothing could compare to the thrill of witnessing and preserving this beautiful convergence of technology and the natural world.

The intricate latticework of supports and anchors, a testament to human ingenuity, stirred my imagination. I envisioned the sleek lines of an Air France Boeing 777, its massive form nestled against the gate, in a mesmerising dance with the airport’s metallic skeleton.

The voids between the beams became frames, the steel a dynamic counterpoint to the aircraft’s curves. I pictured the plane’s reflection rippling across the polished floor, as if the very airport itself were mirroring this marvel of flight. The supporting columns rose like sentinels, their strength a quiet counterpoint to the 777’s poised power.

Every element, from the rivets dotting the beams to the plane’s gleaming winglets, seemed part of a grand composition. Nearby, a family with rambunctious kids splashes water in the fountain, their laughter echoing through the terminal as they try to burn off energy before the long flight ahead.
